The fifth race in the York 10k Road Race League took place on a sweltering evening in Bugthorpe last night. This course is tough enough with its hills without the additional problem of 30oC temperatures. Not surprisingly the turnout was down with times being 3 or 4 minutes slower than in the previous race on the Knavesmire with some runners struggling more than this. Anyway enough of the excuses and onto the race itself.

Laura Thompson won her 3rd race in a row in the series in 40.49 nearly a minute ahead of York Acorn’s Charlotte Bush. Chrissie Dover was 3rd overall and 1st vet 45 in 43.03 as she defied the difficult conditions better than most. For the first time in the series the women didn’t complete a team so fingers crossed for a good turnout in the last race at Wistow in 2 weeks time.

The men were missing a whole host of runners which at least gave the club stalwarts a chance to count in the team that came 8th. Tim Pattison led the club home in 13th place in 39.15 but strangely was 6th vet 35 in a category that he is leading overall. James Wisbey found the going tough in 19th place in 40.21 as he had just returned from holiday in China. Mike Raynes (45.33) had his best run in the series to pass Jon Blake (46.46) at the 6k mark on the long descent. Jon was 2nd vet 60 but needs to run the last race of the series to count in the overall series category. John Lewis (51.53) and Kevin Hind (56.23) both enjoyed making the team.

The last race is back on the flat at Wistow near Selby so let’s hope the weather cools off and we get some fast times and a good turnout from the club.

In other distance running news Mark Bolland-Cage broke his PB and club vet 35 club record by running 4.07.60 for the 1500m at Trafford last night.

A much quieter week for distance running.

Will Hardy ran a PB of 1.53.28 at last Wednesday’s BMC meeting in Birmingham. This followed on from his PB of 3.56.48 over 1500m the week before.

On Sunday Dave Lancaster was 1st vet 65 in the Fountains 10k in 48.20.

There were 28 runners from the club doing parkrun over the weekend. Angus McMillan took 20 seconds off his own course record at Ganavan Sands in Scotland as he ran 15.19. Chrissie Dover came 1st at Heslington in 19.37 with Sophie Robertson-Dover coming 2nd in 20.09. James Tucker was 1st on the Knavesmire in 15.52 with Will Torgerson coming 2nd at Fountains Abbey in 17.02. There were junior age group wins for Lucas Leslie, Freddie Clayton and Josephine Lowson with veteran age group wins for Jon Blake, Laura Thompson and Dave Lancaster. Thomas Douthwaite came 1st in the York junior parkrun with Leilani Adams and Elodie Adams being 2nd and 3rd girls.

The team produced a brilliant performance to break their own National Record, running 3:22.57 and moving to 5th in the World rankings.

Four club distance running records were set over the weekend.

Angus McMillan broke the outright club 3000m record on Saturday at the BMC meeting at Loughborough as he ran 8.02.60 taking 1.47 seconds off the 32 year old club record that was held by Kim Critchley. Angus held off Tommy Shaw who ran 8.09.24 for a PB in the same race. Beth Lewis ran 9.28.11 for 3000m in the same meeting which was faster than both the U17 and U20 club records under the old age groups. There was also a PB for Adam Bateman of 3.55.62 in the 1500m with Gianluca Mastrolonardo running 3.52.79 for the same distance. Moving onto the 800m Sophie Robertson-Dover ran a PB of 2.13.31 with Archie Lawson running 1.53.18.

Alex Botterill put his club vest on in Nice as he achieved the qualifying time for both the European Championships and Commonwealth Games as he ran 1.44.16. The UK trials are next weekend.

Ben Walker broke the U18 club 10k road record in Leeds on Sunday as he ran 32.51 in the run for all 10k. Ben took nearly a minute off the old club record that was set by Oliver Cockerill from 10 years ago. Alfie Howard ran a PB of 36.27 with Neil Walker running his 2nd 10k PB of the week as he ran 47.48.

Friday night saw the latest race in the York University 5k series with another club record being set this time by Sebastian Brown in the U12 age group as he ran his first 5k as opposed to parkrun in 21.36. There were PBs from Matthew Boyle (17.04), Noah Stipetic (18.51) and Harriett Brown (20.30) with Caleb Proudlove (16.41) and Marianne Lowson (18.37) also running.

Dave Lancaster came 2nd vet 65 in the hilly Otley 10 Miles race last Wednesday.

26 runners from the club did parkrun over the weekend. Luke Haynes came 1st at Horncastle in 18.31, Will Torgerson 2nd at Fountains Abbey in 16.49 with Joel Hutchinson coming 3rd at Dalby Forest in 18.31. There were veteran age group wins for Dave Lancaster, Steve Wright and Jon Blake. Archie Hadfield, Lucas Leslie and Thomas Douthwaite were the first 3 runners in the York Junior Parkrun.
