The club fielded ten teams at the Northern Road Relays in Sunderland on Sunday. The course was mostly an out and back one but most runners found the long uphill drag up to the changeover area difficult when it is easy to set off too fast in relays that are more like time trials unless you are doing the first leg.

The senior men’s A team came 8th. Angus McMillan ‘won’ the opening league in 14.39 on the course with the later runners of Gianluca Mastrolonardo (15.36), James Tucker (15.44), Ed Brown (16.48), Mark Bolland-Cage (16.16) and Will Hardy (16.17) completing the later legs. The club’s B team made it to the National Final for the first time by finishing inside the top 25 A teams with 23rd place. The club also fielded a C team for the first time in the event as they came 62nd out of 82 teams taking part. The Senior Women came 10th in their race. Held over the same 5k course but this time over 4 legs Jess Robertson-Dover (18.04), Lucy Gaskin (19.46), Chrissie Dover (19.33) and Laura Thompson (18.58) ran a consistent race that saw them between 8th and 12th places throughout the race.

The under 18s also ran the full 5k course with the women’s team coming 9th. Hannah Lovett was 5th on the 1st leg in 18.36 with Isla Watson (20.49) and Bea Thompson (21.16) completing the team. The B team came 17th in this race. The under 18 men’s team came 15th. In the under 16 races the girls teams came 15th and 22nd with the boys team coming 24th.

In Copenhagen Freddie Clayton ran in the 5k open event of the World Road Running Championships.

16 runners from the club did parkrun over the weekend. Tim Pattison came 1st at Temple Newsam in 18.50. There was a veteran age group win for Dave Lancaster and a junior one for Matilda Baxter. Lucas Leslie and Scarlet Bycroft were the first boy and girl in the York Junior parkrun.

The YDL final for the upper league on Sunday 6/9/26 resulted in York achieving 4th place. This was especially impressive given we had a considerably small team, with the majority of athletes competing close to the maximum number of events in order to obtain points and fill in the gaps we had.

There were a range of incredible performances on the day, with 45 medals and 12 golds.

The U20 women's team actually came 2nd overall with 142 points which considering the majority of that team were U18 girls, is amazing. What's also notable is that Blackheath and Bromley won the U20 women's category by just 1 more point.

Not only were there winning performances within the athlete's own disciplines: gold medals in the A string were (U18 men's long jump Ben Foulger, U18 men's discus Joshua Jenkins and U20 women's hammer throw Kiri Shaw).

There were so many athletes that competed in events they had never even attempted before for the sake of obtaining points. A particular highlight was the U18 men's high jump, where both athletes (Louie Reed and Otto Kearns achieved bronze) were from the throwing group and had decided to compete in this event I think less than a couple hours before. Lily Craske also did a great job of trying out the U18 women's discus despite training in the sprints, and Bea Thompson smashed the 400m hurdles despite focusing on distance running.

Jack Pallister also did both triple jump and long jump he was joined by U18, Zak Harrison in triple jump (achieving bronze medal) even though they are 100m & 200m sprinters.

This was also the case for the relays, in which the U18 men's 4x400m had a team of Louis Richardson, Ewan Robertson, Charlie Shaw and Otto Kearns, are 2 distance runners and 2 throwers.

The main takeaway from the final I think is that we have a lot of versatile athletes who really committed themselves to COYAC's team spirit and did whatever it took to get points. We earned our 4th place through pure grit.

Commitment was exemplified by Matilda Wright whose flight got into the airport at 2am, and who slept at the airport so that she could come compete in 4 events, winning medals in all of them. Truly class.

A particular congratulations to Ben Foulger, who is COYAC'S top scorer for YDLs this year, but is also the second overall top scorer for this league.

Isobel Madden broke the club under 20 half marathon club record in Sunday’s Great North Run in Newcastle. We don’t get many under 20s running the half marathon but Isobel took 10 minutes from the previous record with 1.41.06 to place 6th under 20 in an event with a huge field. Karen Wright also ran 1.55.15 in this race.

Closer to home Katy Wood ran a blisteringly quick 1.12.26 in Sunday’s Vale of York Half Marathon near Selby. Katy’s time was just 9 seconds off her own club record as she won the race by just over 4 and a half minutes from Salford’s Katie Hawkins. Katy’s time puts her just outside the top 20 UK 2026 rankings for the half marathon as Katy prepares to run her 2nd marathon in Berlin in 2 weeks time. Stephen Dring was 4th vet 55 as he just beat the 90 minutes mark with 1.29.57. In the 10k race that took place as part of the same meeting Dave Paver ran a vet 70 club record of 58.41 to place 4th vet 70.

13 of our juniors took part in the University of York 5k series on Friday night as the autumn road running season gets underway. James Bastow led the club home in 16.05 to come 12th overall. Oscar Walker (17.02) and George Ghosh (17.10) narrowly missed out on breaking the 17 minutes barriers. Hannah Lovett was first of the girls across the line as she ran 18.07 to be third female. Noah Stipetic (18.41), Lucas Leslie (18.47) and Lenny Kirk (18.48) were all very close with Jos Cu**in (19.25) and Josh Reid (19.54) not far behind. Isla Watson agonisingly missed out on breaking the 20 minutes barrier with 20.00 with Bea Thompson (20.42), Sienna Newcombe (21.14) and Josephine Lowson (21.58) also running.

21 runners from the club did parkrun over the weekend. There were 1st places for Wiil Hardy (16.05 on the Knavesmire), James Tucker (16.24 in Graz, Austria), Will Toregerson (16.43 at Selby) and Laura Thompson (19.14 at Sewerby). There were veteran age group wins for Jon Blake, Dave Burlton, Tim Pattison and Steve Wright with a junior age group win for Alex Hoy-Bush. Josh Reid was 2nd boy in the York Junior Parkrun.

Jess Robertson-Dover had a very enjoyable 10k road race win in Middlesbrough on Sunday as she won the popular town centre race. Jess won by nearly two minutes in a time of 37.06.

Down in London Laura Thompson won Sunday’s Barking 5k road race in a time of 17.48. Whilst Will Toregerson ran 16.42 in last Wednesday’s University of Leeds 5k.

24 runners from the club did parkrun over the weekend. There were 1st places for James Tucker (15.47 on the Knavesmire), Will Torgerson (16.47 at Fountains Abbey) and Tim Pattison (17.52 at Carterton). Will Morris came 3rd at Knaresborough in 20.03. There were junior age group wins for Ben Walker, Sebastian Brown and Alex Hoy-Bush with veteran age group wins for Karen Wood, Chrissie Dover, Jon Blake, Dave Lancaster and Steve Wright. Leilani and Elodie Adams were 1st and 2nd girls in the York Junior Parkrun.

The club had a fantastic time in Birmingham for the Special Olympics National Games at the Alexander Stadium. Our athletes achieved 2 PBs both in Shot Putt, with throws of 803 and 8.63. and one SB in the 100m with a time of 14.76. The athletes would like to thank City Of York AC for there support in getting us here. Our athletes are looking forward to more competitions in the future.

Good luck to three of our athletes - Chris Cook, Lewis Geering and Daniel Onyett who are attending the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Birmingham this week. Hope the athletes do well and enjoy the experience with coaches and parents supporting them at the event.

In the England Combined Events Championship at Bedford, Sophia Horsfall-Samb won the Under 16 Heptathlon. With 5th in the first event, hurdles, despite not racing or training all summer through injury, a big win in the javelin took her to the front of the competition, and she was around there for the rest of the event. In event 6, 2nd in the shot took her in to the lead, which she held in the final event the 600m.
Juliette Callau won the hurdles, and a good set of results gave her 6th after six events, but she had to withdraw from the 600 through injury.
Imogen Bind finished 26th of the 32.
In the boys octathlon, Hugo Williamson finished a fine 8th of the 16 entries, with a very good pole vault of 3.75
Well done to all ours for taking on this very demanding event.

At the other end of the athletics spectrum Beth Lewis took 10 seconds off the outright female parkrun club record as she ran 16.43 to be first across the line at Hull on Saturday. Beth’s time beat the previous club record that has been held by Katy Wood since April 2023. This is the second week in a row that Beth has been first at parkrun following on from her 16.56 at Cardiff last week. It is very unusual, even at parkrun, for females to cross the line in first place in a distance race so well done to Beth for showing everyone how it is done.

In other parkruns over the weekend India Ibbotson came 1st at Frickley in 22.49, Will Morris continued his comeback from injury with 2nd at Easingwold in 18.27 with Will Torgerson coming 3rd at Fountains Abbey in 16.50. There were veteran age group wins for Tim Pattison, Jon Blake, Gary Ibbotson and Steve Wright with junior age group wins for Oliver Walker and Anna Proctor. Thomas Douthwaite was 2nd boy in the York Junior Parkrun.

Three club records have been set on the roads and at parkrun in the last two weekends.

Chrissie Dover took two minutes off her own Vet 45 club half marathon record as she ran 1.29.28 to come 2nd vet 45 and 13th overall in Sunday’s Newark Half Marathon.

Lucas Leslie took over two minutes from the U12 club 5k record as he ran 19.19 in Friday’s Even Splits 5k on the York University cycle circuit. Oscar Walker (17.23), Matthew Boyle (17.46), Stephen Dring (19.48) and Noah Stipetic (24.44) also ran this race.

At the Podium 5k near Manchester Jess Robertson-Dover ran 17.36 to come 26th.

Beth Lewis took two seconds off her own U18 club parkrun record as she was first over the line 10 days ago in the Cardiff parkrun in a time of 16.56. Last weekend there were first places at parkrun for Angus McMillan (15.41 at Mortimer near Ludlow, Tim Pattinson (17.38 at Macclesfield) and Isla Watson (25.40 on the very hilly Whinlatter Forest course).

Saturday 1st August the final Lower YDL division match took place on home turf. Huge thanks to Susanne Craske for managing the day so efficiently. Thanks also to the officials and many club, athlete and parent volunteers who stepped up to help with the multitude of jobs that come with hosting a meet like this… without you it wouldn’t have been possible.
While gusty conditions denied 5 athletes, 43 official PBs were recorded throughout the day. Athletes were again willing to push themselves outside of their comfort zones to try new things for the first time and fill spots outside of their usual favourites to maximise team points.
York athletes took two of the top ten individual performances of the day; u14 Archie Hadfield claiming one with his 2:08.63 800m and u16 Felix Mitchell who ran the 100m hurdles in 15.57 seconds, beating his previous PB by over 0.6 seconds.
It was an incredibly successful day with City of York AC winning top points for track, relays and field events and all age and gender categories winning their individual sections. York took the overall win with 688 points, over 200 points clear of their nearest rivals Kingston upon Hull AC (482) and Lincoln Wellington AC (453).
There has been a clean sweep for City of York AC in the North Premier East Division of the YDL with both the Lower and Upper teams winning every match and securing their place in the national finals in Liverpool on the 5th and 6th of September. What a credit to all our athletes who work hard at training and the club coaches and volunteers who freely give up so much time to support them.
Let’s put up a good fight in the finals!

Our Senior team produced a really good performance in the fourth and final Northern Senior T&F League Match of the season. A number of gaps remained in the men’s team (long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault) but a strong women’s team meant that we were third on the day and finished the season in third place.
For the fourth consecutive match Sheffield finished the day in first place with 417 points, Lincoln second with 362.5, City of York AC third with 359.5, Doncaster fourth with 320.5, Rotherham fifth with 316.5 and Wakefield in sixth place with 186 points. The final league table looks like this:

There were good wins in the male events for: Cole McAndrew in the 1500m and in the female events for: Rebecca Perry in the 100m, Lucy Gilbertson in the 100m hurdles, Clare Blunt in the pole vault, Maria Schofield in the hammer and Matilda Wright in the javelin and the 4 x 100 team of Sophie Williams, Izzy Langton, Alice Brown, Becky Perry.
Overall, third place represents a strong season for City of York AC. We are competing against clubs from larger cities and both ourselves and Sheffield are also fielding teams in the National Athletics League, meaning our senior athletes are spread across two competitions. However, our performances this season show how competitive we are across two leagues, while also highlighting the need to strengthen the team further by developing greater depth, particularly across the field events.
We can also take great confidence from the strength of our youth programme, with City of York reaching the National Final of the Youth Development League in each of the last five seasons. Our next challenge is to ensure that more of these talented young athletes continue their development into our senior teams, building the depth that will allow us to compete better at both Northern and National League level in the years ahead.
