After Christmas we will reach the business end of the season as the cross country championships take place. As a club we encourage our runners to take part in Yorkshire, North of England and National championships in order earn a county vest, to test themselves against the best runners in the country or simply to rub shoulders with the next Mo Farah. These events actually cater for a broad standard of club runners with almost 2,000 runners doing the senior men’s cross country championships so they are not just for elite runners. There are also team events in all age groups and races and it would be good to complete as many teams as possible.
Mike Raynes [email protected] will be organising the entries for seniors and under 20s with Garry Dickinson [email protected] organising the entries for juniors. We will be doing club entries all three championships so please can runners let us know whether they want to be entered and can they please pay us the entry fee by the closing dates given below.
The Yorkshire Cross Country Championships take place on Saturday January 7th at Lightwater Valley. The closing date for club entries for this championship is Friday 9th December. Here is a link to the prospectus. http://www.northernathletics.org.uk/news/yorkshire-news-page/
The North of England Championships take place on Saturday January 28th at Knowsley Safari Park. The closing date for club entries for this championship is Friday 6th January. Here is a link to the prospectus: http://www.northernathletics.org.uk/events/northern-athletics-cross-country-championships/
The National Championships take place on Saturday February 25th at Wollaton Park, Nottingham. The closing date for club entries is Friday 6th January which is the same date as for the North of England event. Here is a link to the website. http://www.englishcrosscountry.co.uk/

City of York Athletic Club had five teams competing in last Saturday’s Northern Cross Country Relays at Sheffield. The under 15 boys team were the highest finishing of the club’s teams coming home in 5th place. Finnian Hutchinson finished the first leg in12th position which was then improved by Thomas Hayes to 9th on the second leg before Josh Dickinson ran the 4th quickest time overall on the anchor leg. The under 17 boys team also finished in the top ten to place 7th. Angus McMillan ran his normal strong opening leg which put him in the top ten fastest times of the day. This was then consolidated by Luca Parker and Nathan Smith on the final two legs.
The club completed two other teams in the junior age groups with the under 15 girls team coming 24th and the under 11 boys teams came 19th. The club also had two runners in both the under 13 and under 11 girls teams which were one runner short of completing a team.
Josh Schofield and Tyler Hutchinson ran strong legs in the senior relay on the opening two legs with Mike Raynes and Mark Cage completing the team as it finished in 39th place overall.
Meanwhile in local road running news Stephen Kirk finished in an excellent 5th place in the Whixley 10k road race in a time of 37.24.
