One year ago today, I left a well-paid corporate job to go out on my own as a personal trainer in a gym I’d never even visited.
It’s been a year of ups and downs, exactly what you’d expect from going self-employed, but I honestly wouldn’t change a thing.
In that time I’ve:
Delivered around 1,000 1-to-1 sessions.
Watched somewhere between 10–15,000 reps of squats, presses and deadlifts and everything else.
Learned more than I thought possible.
And met a huge number of genuinely great people.
I actually completed my Level 2 Fitness Instruction qualification over 15 years ago at - the same gym my late brother boxed out of. From there I’ve pretty obsessively consumed fitness content and education over the years, learning from people like , in the early days and many others along the way.
Back then, I didn’t do anything with the qualification. It took losing my brother, and later becoming a dad, to really gain perspective on what mattered to me.
I got my level 3 done a few years ago and continue to invest in education and my own coaches and mentors. Becoming a better coach means so much more to me than being a better marketer and learning new things keeps my passion ticking over.
Helping people get stronger, fitter and more confident genuinely gives me a huge amount back.
I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who’s trained with me this year, left a review, recommended me to someone else, or even just liked or shared content - it all helps more than you probably realise.
A special thank you to my family - especially my (very risk-averse) wife, who somehow stayed cool with me going out on my own despite the obvious financial risk. She has helped me build my dream job, taking on more child care and supporting wherever she can - you’re the best ❤️
Thanks to my coach for being a constant and helping me so much in my own training.
And to all my clients and everyone else who’s supported me along the way - thank you!
Here’s to year two 💪
