GAFA Management Pays Courtesy Call on Parliament, Seeks Inclusion in Democracy Cup Initiative

The management of the Ghana Amputee Football Association (GAFA) has paid a courtesy call on the leadership of the Parliament of Ghana to discuss possible collaboration and advocate for the inclusion of amputee football activities in the growing Democracy Cup initiative.

The delegation highlighted the remarkable progress of amputee football in Ghana and underscored the need for greater national visibility and inclusion for athletes living with disabilities. Discussions focused on leveraging sport as a tool for social inclusion, empowerment and national unity.

The engagement also served as an opportunity for GAFA to outline preparations of the national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, toward the upcoming Amputee Football World Cup, where Ghana aims to once again raise the nation’s flag on the international stage.

The Democracy Cup, initiated by Parliament to deepen democratic values and unite citizens through sport, continues to expand its reach through stakeholder engagement and inclusive sporting initiatives. Parliament has also publicly described the competition as a platform for unity and broader collaboration through football.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has previously emphasized the role of sport as a powerful vehicle for strengthening national cohesion and engaging citizens across the country.

The Ghana Amputee National Football Team, the Black Challenge, strengthened international relations and advanced disability inclusion efforts following a special invitation from the Embassy of Spain in Ghana on 10 May 2026. The team participated in an exhibition football match before joining invited guests and football enthusiasts to watch the highly anticipated La Liga encounter between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, where Barcelona secured an impressive 2–0 victory.

The event was organized to promote social integration in Ghana, empower persons with disabilities, and celebrate the passion and unity inspired by La Liga football. It also created an important platform for the Black Challenge to engage key stakeholders, strengthen international partnerships, and showcase the growing impact and development of amputee football in Ghana.

The engagement represents a significant milestone in the team’s ongoing efforts to attract sponsorship and institutional support ahead of the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico, scheduled for November 2026.

The Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, was also present at the event. During the program, the management of the Ghana Amputee National Team held fruitful discussions with him regarding the team’s preparations toward the upcoming World Cup in Mexico.

The discussions also focused on planned international friendly matches, including a proposed Ghana versus Nigeria encounter, as well as matters relating to players’ winning bonuses and outstanding rewards from previous competitions, including the 2023 African Para Games, the 2024 African Cup Championship, and other international tournaments.

Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah assured the team that their concerns had been duly noted and would receive the necessary attention. He further encouraged the management and players by emphasizing that John Dramani Mahama has consistently demonstrated support and compassion for the amputee national team, even before returning to office. He recalled how the President congratulated and rewarded the team financially after Ghana secured qualification for the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup during the 2024 African Cup competition.

He also advised the management of the Black Challenge to commence preparations for the World Cup immediately rather than waiting until the final stages. According to him, early preparation, strategic planning, and sustained support will be critical to the team’s success on the global stage.

The Black Challenge remains fully committed to representing Ghana with pride while continuing to use sports as a powerful platform to promote inclusion, resilience, empowerment, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
