DEAF BASKETBALL GHANA RECEIVES FACELIFT

Kevin Kovacs, former Head Coach of Gallaudet Bison Basketball team, led Giants of Africa in refurbishing the basketball court at the oldest school for the deaf in Ghana. The team also made generous donations of basketball accessories and introduced the children to the game of basketball. Sports kits from Gallaudet University Bison Basketball were also donated to deaf students and teachers.

The Demonstration School for the Deaf (Demodeaf), originally known as the Ghana Mission School for the Deaf, was established in 1957 by the late Dr. Andrews Jackson Foster, a pioneering African-American deaf educator and missionary, popularly known as the “Father of Deaf Education in Africa.”

Inspired by the late Andrew Jackson Foster’s dedication to deaf education, Kevin Kovacs considered it an honour to contribute to the school’s infrastructure as part of efforts to sustain and promote Foster’s legacy and increase public recognition.

Together with a team from Giants of Africa, the newly refurbished basketball court has been handed over to the school authorities, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to promoting inclusive sports development, particularly deaf basketball in Ghana.

"Demodeaf Dream Big" project comes as a great relief to the Deaf Sports community in Ghana. Working with Kevin Kovacs, in collaboration with the Ghana Basketball Association, the Ghana Deaf Sports Federation (GDSF) aims to revive deaf basketball and propel it to greater heights.

The federation extends its gratitude to all key actors and stakeholders: Demodeaf, Kevin Kovacs, Giants of Africa, Gallaudet University, the Ghana Basketball Association, and the Deaf Community.
