Professional footballer Mario Pineida, a left-back for Barcelona SC, was killed in an armed attack in the Samanes 4 area, in northern Guayaquil. The incident occurred when two motorcyclists opened fire on three people outside a butcher shop.

Pineida, 33, was with his mother and another woman at the time and died instantly, according to confirmation from the National Police. The attack left at least two people dead.

The player won league titles with Barcelona SC in 2016 and 2020, was part of the Ecuadorian national team, and also played for clubs such as Fluminense, El Nacional, and Independiente del Valle. His death has caused shock and deep sorrow across Ecuadorian football.
