Committee on Cooperation, International Relations and Conflict Resolution Calls for Coordinated African Action to Address Sudan Crisis
The Chairperson of the Pan-African Parliament's Committee on Cooperation, International Relations and Conflict Resolution, Hon. Phillipus Wido Katamelo of Namibia, today presented the Committee's report on the security and humanitarian crisis in Sudan, calling for a coordinated African response to one of the continent's most pressing conflicts.
Presenting the Committee's recommendations, Hon. Katamelo highlighted the devastating humanitarian impact of the conflict, including mass displacement, widespread human rights violations and conflict-related sexual violence. The Committee expressed grave concern over the illicit smuggling of Sudanese gold as a source of conflict financing and urged African Union Member States to strengthen border controls, curb the illicit trade in natural resources and prevent the movement of arms and foreign fighters into Sudan.
The report further called for enhanced regional cooperation under the African Union and IGAD, increased humanitarian support for refugees and host communities, accountability for perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity, and stronger protection for women, children and other vulnerable groups. The Committee also proposed convening an extraordinary session of the Pan-African Parliament to develop a parliamentary roadmap in support of an African-led resolution of the Sudan conflict.
