The Ministry of Health The Gambia is in high gear preparing for tomorrow's inauguration of the National Food and Drug Quality Control Laboratory. The Honorable Minister of Health, Dr. Amadou Lamin Samateh, is leading the preparation work ahead of tomorrow's inauguration.

The passing of Gambian international para power lifter Modou Gamo came as a heartbreaking shock to the sporting and disability communities across the nation. Known for his determination, humility, and dedication to representing The Gambia on the international stage, Modou was more than an athlete, he was a symbol of courage, perseverance, and hope for many young people living with disabilities.

Throughout his career, Modou proudly represented The Gambia in several international para powerlifting competitions, carrying the Gambian flag with pride and honor. Despite the many challenges that athletes with disabilities often face, he remained committed to his sport and inspired countless others through his discipline and resilience. His journey in para sports earned him admiration from fellow athletes, coaches, and supporters both at home and abroad.

Beyond the competition platform, Modou Gamo was a devoted family man, a loyal friend, and a respected member of society. He shared a close friendship with Hagie G*i Drammeh, the CEO of the Hagie G*i Drammeh Foundation for the Physically Challenged, who also served as his coach and mentor throughout his sporting career. Their relationship was built on years of trust, encouragement, and a shared vision of empowering physically challenged individuals through sports and community support.

Sadly, during the holy month of Ramadan, tragedy struck when Modou suddenly passed away from heart failure after returning home from work. His untimely death left the nation mourning the loss of a remarkable athlete and human being. He leaves behind a grieving wife and three young sons whose future suddenly became uncertain following the painful loss of their father.

In the midst of this sorrow, an inspiring act of compassion and humanity emerged from the Netherlands. Renowned philanthropists Ronald De Ridder and his wife Millie De Ridder have generously stepped forward to sponsor the education of Modou Gamo’s three children. Their kind gesture has brought hope and relief to the bereaved family during one of the most difficult moments of their lives.

The De Ridder family is widely recognized for their humanitarian efforts and dedication to supporting vulnerable children in different communities around the world. Their commitment to ensuring that Modou’s children continue their education reflects the true spirit of compassion and global solidarity. Through this sponsorship, they are not only honoring the memory of Modou Gamo but also investing in the future of his children.

In addition to supporting the late athlete’s family, Ronald and Millie De Ridder have also donated five boxes of humanitarian items through the Hagie G*i Drammeh Foundation for the Physically Challenged. These donations will be distributed to orphanages to support vulnerable children and bring smiles to those in need.

The Hagie G*i Drammeh Foundation for the Physically Challenged continues to play a vital role in supporting people living with disabilities and vulnerable communities across The Gambia. Through partnerships with compassionate individuals and organizations around the world, the foundation remains committed to promoting inclusion, empowerment, education, and humanitarian support.

As the nation remembers Modou Gamo, his legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched, the inspiration he gave to aspiring athletes, and the love he shared with family and friends. Though he is no longer with us, his courage and determination will forever remain part of Gambian para sports history.

Fifteen years later, history has been rewritten!
The last time The Gambia won a bronze medal at the TOLAC Wrestling Championship was in 2011 (hosted by Senegal) when the national team secured a 3rd place finish. Since then, the nation endured a long 15-year wait for another podium appearance.
Today, under the leadership of the Matarr Saine led executive of the Gambia Wrestling Association, that wait is finally over and in remarkable fashion.
Not only did The Gambia successfully host the TOLAC Wrestling Championship for the very first time in history, but our national team also rose to the occasion by once again winning bronze and bringing an end to the 15 years drought.

The Gambia 2011 TOLAC team was lead by coach Omar Jeng and Serigne Modou Juke.
The team was comprise of Famara Jarju, Bakary Jarju alias Lekket bu Barra, Ebrima Sarr, Amadou Ndure and Mariama Bojang..

Ebrima Sarr won silver in the 100kg Category and Amadou Ndure won silver in the 120kg category.

Ivory Coast won the 66 kg, 100 kg, and 120 kg categories, while Togo won the 86 kg category.

Ghana vs. Benni

Benni won the 66 kg, 76 kg, and 86 kg categories, while Ghana won only the 100 kg.

Nigeria won against Liberia in both categories: the 66kg, 76kg, 86kg, 100kg, and 120kg.

Sierra Leone won the 66kg and 86kg categories, while Guinea Conakry won the 76kg, 100kg, and 120kg categories.
