This short film is about all the moments we experienced to the Provatina Cave Rigging Project 2026. It contains footage from the expedition to install the permanent rigging, carried out by members of the Epirus Caving Association "Apeiros Gaia" (Hellenic Speleological Society of Epirus "Apeiros Gaia").

The expedition took place from 29 June to 2 July 2026.

Purpose of the Permanent Rigging:
The objective of the permanent rigging was to provide safer and more efficient access to the major vertical pitches of Provatina while minimizing the need for repeated bolting during future expeditions.

The installation aims to provide a more environmentally responsible and sustainable solution, facilitating future caving expeditions while maintaining respect for the cave's natural environment.

Important Notice
This video documents only footage from this specific expedition.
Although the permanent rigging depicted on the short film was installed using high-quality stainless steel equipment, anchors, metal components, and ropes are all subject to wear, corrosion, deterioration, and possible failure over time, depending on the conditions inside the cave.

For this reason, this video must not be considered a guide for a safe descent, nor should it be used as the sole source of information regarding the condition of the rigging.

Every caving team is responsible for conducting an on-site inspection of all anchors, rigging, equipment, and current cave conditions before undertaking any descent.

Descending Provatina is suitable only for trained cavers with proven competence in Single Rope Technique (SRT), equipped with appropriate technical equipment, and undertaking the descent entirely at their own responsibility while taking into account the demanding conditions of both the cave and the alpine environment of the Tymfi massif.

We hope this footage will serve as a valuable record for the caving community and contribute to the safer planning and preparation of future expeditions to the legendary Provatina Cave.

Τα Quick Links καθώς και το σχοινί 200 μ. / 9 mm αποτέλεσαν χορηγία του Δήμου Ζαγορίου και συν-διοργανωτή της όλης δράσης.

Σκοπός της δράσης

Στόχος του μόνιμου αρματώματος ήταν η ασφαλέστερη και πιο λειτουργική πρόσβαση στα μεγάλα κατακόρυφα πηγάδια της Προβατίνας, με τρόπο που να περιορίζει την ανάγκη για επαναλαμβανόμενες νέες διανοίξεις (bolting) σε μελλοντικές αποστολές.

Η εγκατάσταση επιδιώκει να προσφέρει μια πιο οικολογική και βιώσιμη λύση, διευκολύνοντας τις μελλοντικές σπηλαιολογικές αποστολές, διατηρώντας παράλληλα τον σεβασμό προς το φυσικό περιβάλλον του βαράθρου.

🍲 Διατροφή αποστολής – όταν η οργάνωση κάνει τη διαφορά

Σε μια τετραήμερη αποστολή σε αλπικό περιβάλλον, πάνω από τα 2.000 μέτρα, η σωστή διατροφή δεν είναι πολυτέλεια· είναι βασική προϋπόθεση για την ασφάλεια, την απόδοση και την επιτυχία της ομάδας.

Ολόκληρος ο σχεδιασμός και η οργάνωση της διατροφής αναλήφθηκαν από την Ευγενία Κουζμίνα, η οποία, έχοντας συμμετάσχει σε αμέτρητες ορεινές και σπηλαιολογικές αποστολές, γνωρίζει πολύ καλά τις απαιτήσεις μιας τέτοιας προσπάθειας. Με εμπειρία και άριστο προγραμματισμό, κατάφερε να οργανώσει ένα πλήρες διατροφικό πλάνο που κάλυψε τις ανάγκες πέντε ατόμων για τέσσερις ημέρες, με έμφαση στην υψηλή ενεργειακή αξία, το χαμηλό βάρος μεταφοράς, την οικονομία σε νερό και καύσιμα, αλλά και την ποικιλία των γευμάτων.

Η κατασκήνωση διέθετε πλήρως οργανωμένο μαγειρείο, όπου καθημερινά ετοιμάζονταν ζεστά γεύματα, τσάι βουνού με μέλι και καφές, προσφέροντας στην ομάδα την απαραίτητη ενέργεια για τις πολύωρες εργασίες στο πεδίο. Το μενού βασίστηκε σε αφυδατωμένες πρώτες ύλες, όσπρια, δημητριακά, τυριά, αυγά και φρέσκα λαχανικά, αποδεικνύοντας ότι ακόμη και σε δύσκολες συνθήκες μπορεί να υπάρξει σωστή και ισορροπημένη διατροφή.

Ιδιαίτερα σημαντική ήταν και η διαχείριση του νερού, καθώς στην κατασκήνωση μεταφέρθηκαν δεκάδες λίτρα για πόση, μαγείρεμα και βασική υγιεινή, ενώ πραγματοποιήθηκε και συμπληρωματικός ανεφοδιασμός όταν χρειάστηκε.

Θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε θερμά τον Νίκο Κορόζη για την πολύτιμη προσφορά του στην υδροδότηση της αποστολής, αλλά και για τη συνολική υποστήριξή του. Η συμβολή του ήταν ουσιαστική και συνέβαλε σημαντικά στην ομαλή εξέλιξη της αποστολής και μας προσέφερε ένα πλουσιοπάροχο γεύμα με κρέας και λουκάνικα, την τελευταία μέρα της αποστολής!

Πίσω από κάθε επιτυχημένη αποστολή δεν βρίσκονται μόνο οι καταβάσεις και οι εξερευνήσεις, αλλά και η σωστή προετοιμασία, η οργάνωση και οι άνθρωποι που φροντίζουν ώστε όλα να λειτουργούν όπως πρέπει.

🍲 Expedition Nutrition – The Importance of Good Planning

During a four-day expedition in an alpine environment above 2,000 meters, proper nutrition is not a luxury—it is essential for safety, performance, and the overall success of the team.

The entire nutrition plan and food logistics were organized by Eugenia Kouzmina (FlyFox Caver), whose extensive experience in countless mountain and caving expeditions made her the ideal person for the task. Drawing on years of expedition planning, she designed a menu that met the needs of a five-person team for four days, balancing high caloric value, low transport weight, minimal water and fuel consumption, and a varied, nutritious diet.

The expedition camp featured a fully functional field kitchen, where hot meals, mountain tea with honey, and coffee were prepared every day, providing the team with the energy needed for long hours of demanding fieldwork. The menu relied on long-life and dehydrated ingredients, legumes, grains, cheese, eggs, and fresh vegetables, demonstrating that even in remote alpine conditions it is possible to maintain a balanced and satisfying diet.

Water management was another key aspect of the expedition's logistics. Dozens of liters of water were transported to the camp for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene, with an additional resupply carried out when required.

We would also like to express our sincere thanks to Nikos Korozis for his invaluable contribution to the expedition's water supply and for his overall support throughout the project. His assistance played an important role in the smooth ex*****on of the expedition.

Behind every successful expedition lies far more than exploration itself. Careful planning, efficient logistics, and the dedication of experienced team members are what make ambitious projects like this possible.

🤝 Οι άνθρωποι πίσω από την αποστολή

Κάθε επιτυχημένη αποστολή είναι αποτέλεσμα ομαδικότητας, σωστού σχεδιασμού και της υποστήριξης ανθρώπων και φορέων που μοιράζονται το ίδιο όραμα. Η αποστολή στην Προβατίνα δεν αποτέλεσε εξαίρεση.

Η υποστήριξή του επέτρεψε στην ομάδα να αφιερωθεί απρόσκοπτα στις εργασίες της αποστολής, χωρίς την ανάγκη καθημερινών μετακινήσεων προς την πηγή Ασπρόβρυση, περί τα 40 λεπτά πεζοπορία από το βάραθρο.

Η Προβατίνα καταλήγει σε έναν εντυπωσιακό θάλαμο διαστάσεων περίπου 52 μέτρων μήκους και 20 μέτρων πλάτους, στον οποίο οδηγεί ένα βάραθρο που λειτουργεί ως φυσική καταβόθρα. Στο τέλος του θαλάμου διατηρείται η **«Μαύρη Λίμνη»**, μια μικρή συγκέντρωση νερού με έντονη απόθεση οργανικού υλικού που έχει παρασυρθεί και συσσωρευτεί στον πυθμένα του σπηλαίου με την πάροδο του χρόνου. Στον ίδιο χώρο σώζονται τμήματα του εξοπλισμού που χρησιμοποίησε ο Βρετανικός Στρατός κατά την πρώτη επιτυχημένη εξερεύνηση της Προβατίνας, καθώς και ένα μικρό αυτοσχέδιο μνημείο (shrine/ chapel) με αναμνηστικά και αντικείμενα που άφησαν προηγούμενες σπηλαιολογικές αποστολές. Πρόκειται για έναν χώρο με ιδιαίτερη ιστορική και συμβολική αξία, που αποτελεί ξεχωριστό σημείο αναφοράς για κάθε σπηλαιολόγο που φτάνει στον πυθμένα του βαράθρου. Σήμερα, η πρόσβαση στην Προβατίνα πραγματοποιείται μέσω μόνιμου αρματώματος με ανοξείδωτα βιομηχανικά βύσματα και πλακέτες, μια προσφορά του Lappas Climbing και Πέτρου Λάππα, προσφέροντας ασφαλέστερη και πιο λειτουργική κατάβαση για εκπαιδευμένους και πιστοποιημένους σπηλαιολόγους.

The Provatina ends in an impressive chamber measuring approximately 52 meters in length and 20 meters in width, reached through a shaft that serves as a natural sinkhole. At the far end of the chamber lies the "Black Lake," a small body of water containing a heavy accumulation of organic material that has been washed in and deposited on the cave floor over time.

The same chamber also preserves parts of the equipment used by the British Army during the first successful exploration of Provatina, as well as a small improvised shrine with mementos and objects left behind by previous caving expeditions. This is a site of considerable historical and symbolic significance, regarded as a landmark destination for every caver who reaches the bottom of the shaft.

Today, access to Provatina is facilitated by a permanent rigging system using stainless steel industrial anchors and hangers, generously provided by Lappas Climbing and Petros Lappas, offering a safer and more efficient descent for trained and certified cavers.

Η Προβατίνα και ο υπόγειος πάγος...

Η Προβατίνα αποτελεί ένα χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα βαθιού αλπικού σπηλαιοβαράθρου. Έχει αναπτυχθεί κατά μήκος μεγάλων κατακόρυφων τεκτονικών ασυνεχειών στους ασβεστόλιθους ηλικίας Ιουρασικού έως Ανώτερου Κρητιδικού που δομούν την Τύμφη.

Σε βάθος περίπου 180 μέτρων διατηρείται μόνιμη απόθεση πάγου, με μέσο πάχος περίπου 15 μέτρων. Ο πάγος αυτός σχηματίζεται από τη συσσώρευση χιονιού κατά τους χειμερινούς μήνες και από τα νερά που διηθούνται στο εσωτερικό του σπηλαίου. Η διατήρησή του οφείλεται στις σταθερά χαμηλές θερμοκρασίες που επικρατούν στο εσωτερικό του βαράθρου και στη θέση της παγοαπόθεσης, η οποία παραμένει μόνιμα προστατευμένη από την άμεση ηλιακή ακτινοβολία.

Τον Ιούλιο του 2025, στην αποστολή του ΣΠΕΛΕΟ στην Προβατίνα, παρατηρήθηκε ολοκληρωτική απώλεια του πάγου στο ιστορικό πατάρι (βλ σχετικό βίντεο, στο 10' λεπτό. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7orfEAGnH4M ).

Ωστόσο η φετινή αποστολή του Συλλόγου, επιβεβαίωσε την παρουσία πάγου αρχές Ιούλη του 2026.

EN: Provatina and the Ice ...

Provatina is a characteristic example of a deep alpine shaft cave. It has developed along major vertical tectonic discontinuities within the Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous limestones that form Mount Tymfi.

At a depth of approximately 180 meters, a permanent ice deposit is preserved, with an average thickness of around 15 meters. This ice forms through the accumulation of snow during the winter months, as well as from water that infiltrates into the interior of the cave. Its preservation is due to the consistently low temperatures prevailing inside the shaft and the location of the ice deposit, which remains permanently protected from direct solar radiation.

In July 2025, during the SPELEO expedition to Provatina, the complete loss of ice from the historic ledge was observed (see the relevant video at the 10-minute mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7orfEAGnH4M ).

However, this year’s expedition by APEIROS GAEA Caving club confirmed the presence of ice in Provatina again in early July 2026.

GR: Η Προβατίνα είναι ένα από τα πιο εμβληματικά και ιστορικά σπηλαιοβάραθρα της Ελλάδας, καθώς και ένα από τα σημαντικότερα κάθετα σπήλαια της Ευρώπης. Βρίσκεται στο οροπέδιο της Αστράκας, στο όρος Τύμφη, εντός του Εθνικού Πάρκου Βόρειας Πίνδου, και ξεχωρίζει για το εντυπωσιακό πρώτο κατακόρυφο πηγάδι της, βάθους 180 μέτρων, το οποίο για πολλά χρόνια συγκαταλεγόταν στα βαθύτερα μονοκόμματα βάραθρα του κόσμου. Η εξερεύνησή της ξεκίνησε το 1962 από το Cambridge University Caving Club και έκτοτε αποτέλεσε σημείο αναφοράς για τη διεθνή σπηλαιολογική κοινότητα, φιλοξενώντας δεκάδες ελληνικές και ξένες αποστολές που συνέβαλαν στην εξέλιξη των τεχνικών κατάβασης και στην εξερεύνηση των μεγάλων κατακόρυφων σπηλαίων. Η Προβατίνα αναπτύσσεται σε ασβεστολιθικά πετρώματα της Τύμφης, φτάνει σε συνολικό βάθος περίπου –410 μέτρων και αποτελεί χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα αλπικού καρστικού βαράθρου, ενώ στο πρώτο μεγάλο πηγάδι της διατηρείται κατά περιόδους μόνιμη απόθεση χιονιού και πάγου. Σήμερα εξακολουθεί να αποτελεί έναν από τους σημαντικότερους προορισμούς για εκπαιδευμένους σπηλαιολόγους, συνδυάζοντας ιδιαίτερη γεωλογική, ιστορική και εξερευνητική αξία.

EN: Provatina is one of the most iconic and historically significant vertical caves in Greece, as well as one of the most remarkable vertical shafts in Europe. Located on the Astraka Plateau of Mount Tymfi, within the Vikos–Aoös National Park in the Northern Pindus National Park, it is distinguished by its impressive first vertical pitch, approximately 180 metres deep, which for many years ranked among the deepest uninterrupted vertical shafts in the world. Its modern exploration began in 1962, when it was discovered by the Cambridge University Caving Club, and since then it has become a landmark destination for the international caving community. Numerous Greek and international expeditions have contributed to the exploration of the cave and to the development of vertical caving techniques. Developed within the limestone formations of the Tymfi massif, Provatina reaches a total depth of approximately 410 metres and represents a classic example of an alpine karst shaft. A permanent accumulation of snow and ice is periodically preserved within its first major pitch, reflecting the cave's unique microclimate. Today, Provatina remains one of Greece's premier destinations for experienced cavers, combining exceptional geological, historical, and exploratory significance.

"Το Χάσμα του Έπους" είναι ένα από τα βαθύτερα και πιο εντυπωσιακά βάραθρα της Ελλάδας, με συνολικό βάθος που φτάνει τα 451–455 μέτρα. Βρίσκεται στο οροπέδιο της Τύμφης, στην καρδιά του Γεωπάρκου Βίκου–Αώου, και ξεχωρίζει για τη μοναδική γεωμορφολογία του ως μια τεράστια καταβόθρα με διπλή είσοδο.

Η σπηλαιολογική του ιστορία ξεκινά τη δεκαετία του 1960, ενώ το 1969 ο Άγγλος σπηλαιολόγος Livesey έγινε ο πρώτος που έφτασε στον πυθμένα του. Σε αντίθεση με άλλα γνωστά βάραθρα της περιοχής, όπως η γειτονική Προβατίνα, το Χάσμα του Έπους παρουσιάζει διαφορετική μορφολογία και ιδιαίτερο επιστημονικό ενδιαφέρον.

Η πιο πρόσφατη εξερεύνηση πραγματοποιήθηκε στα τέλη Μαΐου – αρχές Ιουνίου 2026 από τον Σπηλαιολογικό Σύλλογο SPELEO, με στόχο την εξερεύνηση, χαρτογράφηση και πλήρη τεκμηρίωση του σπηλαίου έως το βαθύτερο γνωστό σημείο του.

Τα πλάνα αυτού του βίντεο προέρχονται από την κατάβαση της Μαρίας Φωτιάδη, μέλους του Συλλόγου ΑΠΕΙΡΟΣ ΓΑΙΑ, η οποία συμμετείχε στην αποστολή.

EN: The Chasm of Epos is one of the deepest and most impressive vertical caves in Greece, reaching a total depth of 451–455 meters. Located on the Tymfi Plateau, in the heart of the Vikos–Aoos Geopark, it stands out for its unique geomorphology as a massive sinkhole with a double entrance.

Its speleological exploration began in the 1960s, and in 1969, the British caver Livesey became the first person to reach its bottom. Unlike other well-known shafts in the area, such as the nearby Provatina, the Chasm of Epos has a distinct geological structure and is of significant scientific interest.

The most recent expedition took place from late May to early June 2026, organized by the SPELEO Caving Club. The team carried out exploration, surveying, and comprehensive documentation of the cave, reaching its deepest known section.

The footage featured in this video was filmed during the descent of Maria Fotiadi, a member of the APEIROS GAEA Caving Club of Epirus, who participated in the expedition.
