The Most Overlooked Nutrient In Freediving

Freedivers love talking about nutrition. Conversations often revolve around hydration, fasting, carbohydrates, supplements, electrolytes, and meal timing before a dive. Entire debates emerge around whether divers should eat before training, how long they should fast, or which foods produce the lightest feeling in the water. While many of these discussions have merit, they often overlook one of the most important nutritional factors affecting long-term performance: daily protein intake.

Protein is one of the most overlooked nutrients in freediving. Discover how daily protein intake influences recovery, adaptation, muscle maintenance, performance, and long-term athletic development.

Why We Created Icon

For almost two decades, Alchemy has been obsessed with carbon. Since 2006, our work has focused on understanding it, refining it and finding better ways to turn the movement of a freediver into efficient propulsion underwater. But there was always one part of the fin we did not make ourselves. The foot pocket.

We built our blades around foot pockets produced by other companies. For many years, that worked. We adapted our designs, experimented with different combinations and created some of the highest-performing carbon fins we knew how to make. Eventually, however, we reached a point where adaptation was no longer enough.

We had a very clear idea of what we wanted the next generation of Alchemy fins to become, but we were trying to build that future around a component we did not design and could not fundamentally change. The foot pocket had become the limitation. So we made a decision. If the foot pocket we needed did not exist, we would have to create it ourselves.

Discover why Alchemy created ICON carbon freediving fins, combining competition-grade performance, adaptive fit, comfort and versatility in one system.

Safety in freediving is not someone waiting at the surface.

It is knowing when to meet the diver, how to approach, what to watch for, and being close enough to act before a situation becomes an emergency.

A good safety diver does not simply follow the dive. They understand it.

Because when someone is coming back from depth, the last meters are the ones that matter most.

For years, lots of freedivers accepted a strange idea: if a foot pocket performs, it has to hurt. The tighter, harder and more uncomfortable it was, the more efficient it was.

This was partially true because of the rubber material of the foot pockets that needed to be stretched to transfer energy properly or compensate for the deformation they sustained under depth.

So, some of the highest-performing foot pockets became something you wore for a single dive, sometimes for only a few minutes, before the pressure and pain became too much.

That thinking is wrong.

Pain is not performance. A foot pocket needs to hold the foot securely, minimize unwanted movement and transfer energy efficiently to the blade. None of those things require unnecessary pressure or discomfort.

And when the same diver spends hundreds of hours training for the dive that matters, using one setup for training and another for competition never made much sense to us either.

That was one of the fundamental problems we wanted to solve with ICON.

The ICON foot pocket was engineered to combine competition-level power transfer with the comfort required for long training sessions. Power Lock rings allow the connection across the foot to be adjusted, while Adaptive Fit silicone cushions fine-tune internal volume and heel retention.

Train in them. Compete in them. Spend hours in them.

Because performance should never come at the expense of comfort.
