The making of a race car

The 2 year making of an Astra G Coupe circuit race car, for participating the Greek FST2 Class (Formula Saloon, Turbo, 2 wheel drive) championship. A journey that started on May 2016 and had the first championship participation on May 2018,

On the chassis of the Astra Coupe several modifications were applied to allow perfect fitting of a Proflex suspension with a completely new geometry and the placement of a heavy duty 6SP sequential dogbox straight cut gearbox. Yet with minimal weight reduction in the first stage of development the car exceeds 1290kg with driver and a full fuel tank. 2001 BTCC original cut aero-kit is fit around the car, yet adapted to the larger wheels (18/9) and slightly wider suspension setup of the car as compared to original BTCCs. Further adaptations of aero kit have to do with air, engine and brake cooling. A 160cm carbon fiber lays at the end of the body.

6pot front and 4pot rear AP Racing brakes with double pressure adjusters regulate braking and hydravic handbrake.

A fully forged 2L Z20LEx engine, a result of mixing Z20LEH with Z20LET and several new parts a stable 400+PS engine moves the heavy body around the circuit. The engine is well able to produce in excess of 520PS as of today, but it is not operated under full pressure in races. The engine is aspirated through a huge twin scroll EFR turbo at pressures under 1.4bar and is capable of reving efficiently up to 7000rpm. A custom exhaust system and full face inter-cooler have been designed and integrated with it. The system is managed by integrated DTAFast solution (2 controllers + screen)

Air flow is full custom with airways built into the front bumper and the hood delivering over 15C lower operating temperatures than original BTCC/Opel setup. Water injection is applied to intercooler.
