Part 2!

Keeping on strong in their adventure, the boys headed on down towards Colombia next.

Capt. Jono recounts this leg of the journey for us here:

“Leaving Aruba, we set a course for Santa Marta,
Colombia—a 280-mile leg across the Atlantic. Running in typical Caribbean conditions with 19 to 20-knot winds and building seas, she proved herself immediately: soft-riding, economical, and solid, burning just 430 gallons over 13 hours of steady running.
After a quick, seamless check-in with help from local friends at Marina Santa Marta, we pushed 150 miles onward to Cartagena. Crossing the notorious Rio Magdalena plume brought heavy choppy seas, but she handled it with ease. We tied up at Club Nâutico de Cartagena to prepare for the overnight push across the Caribbean Sea to Panama.”

Last week we made the exciting announcement about our 11th addition to our fleet, La Hechicera! Like all of our boats, we personally oversaw the transfer from her previous home to her new one with us in Puerto San Jose.

A voyage historically undertaken by our Jefe, Captain David Salazar himself, this time our Capt. Jono from The Ho**er kept his spirit alive and thriving on this expedition.

Come along with us in this mini series as we document La Hechicera’s massive 1700+ mile journey from Curaçao to Guatemala!

First up—Curaçao to Aruba:
“On August 20th, we flew into Curaçao to meet Jens and begin initial preparations. Our first leg was a short 70-mile shake-down run to Aruba to test the vessel’s systems and sea keeping. We docked at the historic Varadero Marina and held up for a couple of days to let a weather window pass. This gave us the perfect opportunity to get intimately familiar with the boat, stock up on fuel, provisions, and ensure everything was set for comfortable passage-making.”

September 14th will always belong to our Captain David Salazar.

If you were lucky enough to share a boat, a cigar, or a story with David, you knew you were in the presence of someone truly special. He set the standard for excellence at Casa Vieja Lodge, but more than that, he built a family here.

To honor him today, we’re unveiling a special birthday gift in his memory: lucky number 11 to join the Casa Vieja fleet, the 43’ 1978 Merritt currently known as La Hechicera! This special boat shares the same legendary specs as La Chingona—and will be the “His” Boat to our Jefa Kristen’s “Hers” Boat, La Chignona.

Capt. Jono and Ludwing from The Ho**er made the journey across the water to run her all the way back from Curaçao, and she’s safely in our boatyard now. She’ll be undergoing our signature CVL overhaul to prepare her for the fleet, so stay tuned for what’s to come.

David’s presence is felt every single day out on the water with us, and while he may no longer be captaining at the helm, this newest addition to our family will be an official tribute of him on the dock with us always. Today, on his 56th birthday, we honor his memory by doing what he loved most: celebrating life, respecting the ocean, and keeping the passion for billfishing alive.

Happy Birthday, David. You are deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. 🫶🏽🎈
