Live Tracking BMW ATIR 2024 Outrigger Canoe - Live Event Tracking

Fun fact! In 1975, historian and Polynesian Voyaging Society member Herb Kawainui Kane designed a replica of a traditional Hawaiian double-hulled voyaging canoe called Hokule‘a, or “Star of Gladness.” Hokule‘a departed Honolua Bay, Maui, in 1976, and reached Tahiti 34 days later. Over the course of the next couple decades, the Hokule'a became an iconic, spiritual symbol for the Hawaiian people.
Epic water at this year’s Sai Kung Coastal Challenge! Co-organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) and the Victoria Recreation Club, this year’s event was big. The swell was up and with a strong north easterly blowing, conditions were super challenging. Check out this video to get a taste of outrigger canoe action, Hong Kong style!

Fun fact! There are now more than 60 canoe clubs in Hawaii, and Hawaiian outrigger canoes are the standard canoe used internationally in outrigger canoe racing. The shape, length and weight requirements for racing are all very strict based on Hawaiian culture and tradition, commonly using original Hawaiian customs, names, techniques and traditions for all parts of the sport.
Some Hawaiian outrigger terms:
Wa`a (vah-ah) Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe
Wa`a Kaulua (vah-ah cow-lew-ah) Double Haul Canoe
Huli (who-lee) To flip over canoe
Huki (who-key) To pull
Hoe (ho-aya) Paddle

Fun fact! It has been said that canoe racing has been around as long as there have been two canoes. While outrigger canoes were not invented in Hawaii, the sport of canoe racing was. Chiefs often placed bets on the outcome of the races as a form of sport and recreation.

There have been many female outrigger paddlers throughout history who have made significant contributions to the sport and achieved remarkable feats in outrigger canoe racing. Lauren Bartlett is a highly accomplished Australian paddler who has achieved numerous victories in international outrigger competitions.

Fun fact! The word Aloha has many meanings and connotations:
1. Love and Affection: At its core, "aloha" means love, affection, peace, compassion, and mercy. It embodies a spirit of mutual respect and care for others.
2. Aloha Spirit: The "Aloha Spirit" is a way of living and treating others with love and respect. It is a guiding principle in Hawaiian culture that emphasizes harmony, kindness, and a positive attitude.
3. Philosophical and Spiritual Significance: In a broader sense, "aloha" represents a philosophy of life that encourages people to live in harmony with themselves, others, and the natural world. It is about being mindful, present, and connected to the world around you.
4. Legal Definition: Interestingly, the "Aloha Spirit" is also codified in Hawaiian law. The Hawaii Revised Statutes, Section 5-7.5, describes the Aloha Spirit as a coordination of mind and heart within each person. It brings each person to the self. Each person must think and emote good feelings to others.

Fun fact! As a result of the harsh terrain of the land, including jagged volcanic lava rock, steep cliffs, wind and waves, outrigger canoes became an essential tool for tasks such as fishing and transporting goods and people. Native Hawaiians soon learned they could build a whole canoe hull from a single Koa tree on the Big Island. Outrigger canoes evolved over the last 2,000 years, but Hawaiian outrigger canoes remain built for battling ocean conditions and are renowned for their unique shape, design, and lack of extra ornamentation.

In Tahiti, the Hawaiki Nui Va'a is a highly regarded outrigger canoe race that spans three days and covers a distance of approximately 80 miles (128 kilometers) around the islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a, and Bora Bora. This race is known for its challenging open-ocean conditions and is a significant event in French Polynesia's cultural calendar. Four of our Yacht Club ladies will participate in this epic race this November!
