THE SELF AND DESTINY
A lot of people talk about destiny, predestination, and fate. This attitude is deeply ingrained in Chinese culture. “We were destined to meet.” “I can’t change it, I guess it’s my fate.” “It was meant to be.”
Then there’s an idea that seems distant from this: the self is empty. Associated with this idea are concepts like the nameless, the wordless, the illusion of the world, and the emptiness of the self. This isn’t the emptiness that nihilists and cynics lament. It means that there is no absolute, objective reality to the self.
I haven’t heard of anyone who has put the two thoughts against each other.
It starts with this: doesn’t destiny attach to a self? In fact, it’s the ultimate reinforcement of your self. It’s your inescapable “record.” It’s the “script” that you must adhere to even if you try to outrun it with all the determination of an Oedipus.
So let me ask: if your self is empty, how can you have a destiny?
The masters never seemed to say this, but if we follow this thought and realize the emptiness of the self, where can destiny attach? If we have no self, no predestination can chase us.
Don’t get scared of an “empty self.” Think of it like this: You’re a beautiful vessel, but if you’re empty inside, then you can sometimes be filled and sometimes pour out all sorts of things. If you’re clogged up with memories and worries, how can the divine get in? So if you’re open and Tao can flow through, then you are the flow of Tao and not the repository stuck with some imposed fate.

在任何關係中,懂得服軟,輪流低頭,就不會走散。
其實哪有什麼天生般配的人,只不過是一個懂得包容遷就,一個懂得適可而止。

如果喜愛參禪打坐,就不會整天東奔西跑;
如果喜愛念經誦咒,就不會總說別人過失;
如果喜愛明觀心性,就不會被煩惱痛苦所左右。
