Strength training positively impacts the mental health of teenagers by reducing anxiety, stress, and depression while improving self-esteem, resilience, and overall psychological well-being.
A systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that strength training significantly decreases anxiety (SMD = −1.75; p = 0.007) and depression (SMD = −1.61; p = 0.0007) in adolescents, likely due to its role in enhancing brain development and hormonal balance. Additionally, muscle-strengthening exercises (MSE) have been linked to improved subjective well-being and resilience. Research shows that MSE enhances physical self-perceptions, such as perceived appearance and sports competence, which generalize to higher global self-esteem.
Furthermore, strength training builds confidence, grit, and satisfaction during the critical developmental period of adolescence. It helps teenagers establish routines and provides a sense of accomplishment, which contributes to better mental health outcomes. Collectively, these findings highlight the potential of strength training as a powerful intervention for improving mental health in teenagers.

Strength training for teenagers is often surrounded by myths that can discourage participation and limit its potential benefits. Common misconceptions include beliefs that strength training stunts growth, increases the risk of injury, or is ineffective for young individuals. However, scientific evidence consistently debunks these myths.

For instance, the idea that resistance training damages growth plates and stunts growth has been thoroughly disproven. Research shows that when performed with proper technique and supervision, strength training enhances bone mineral density and overall skeletal health, reducing injury risks rather than increasing them[3][4]. Additionally, concerns about its ineffectiveness for prepubertal teenagers are unfounded. Studies reveal that even before puberty, adolescents can achieve significant strength gains through neuromuscular adaptations, though absolute muscle hypertrophy may be limited compared to postpubertal peers[2][5].

Furthermore, strength training offers numerous benefits beyond physical strength, such as improved motor skills, reduced injury risks, better posture, and enhanced mental well-being[1][2]. These findings highlight the importance of dispelling myths to encourage safe and effective participation in strength training among teenagers.
