🤿 New on the blog: DAN & Dive Insurance. What every diver should know.

This green case comes on every one of our boats. It's our DAN emergency oxygen kit, and it's one of many ways we keep our divers safe.

Safety doesn't stop at the boat, though. If something goes wrong underwater, the costs of evacuation, hyperbaric chamber treatment, and medical care can add up quickly. That's why we always recommend dive insurance before you travel.

In our latest blog post, we cover:
✅ What DAN (Divers Alert Network) is and what they do
✅ What dive insurance covers
✅ Why regular travel insurance often doesn't cover diving
✅ How to make sure you're covered before your trip

Meet the reef's grumpiest regular 😄🐟

This Nassau grouper swam right up to the camera with a look that says, "Do you mind?" He was busy at a cleaning station. If you look closely, you can see the little neon gobies (the blue-striped fish) picking parasites off his face, around his eyes, and on the brain coral below.

It's one of the reef's best partnerships: the gobies get a meal, and the grouper gets a free health check. Hanging back and watching a cleaning station is one of our favourite things to do on a dive. 💙

Nassau groupers are listed as critically endangered, so every encounter like this is special. Please dive gently and give them space. 🌊

The weekend is finally here! 🐢💙

Time to slow down a little and take it easy, just like this turtle gliding over the reef. No rush, no stress, just going with the flow 🌊

Let's go diving, Roatán! 🌊🤿

We couldn't have asked for better conditions: clear blue skies, flat calm water and an awesome crew ready to splash. 🙌

From giant strides to back-roll entries (and a few peace signs along the way ✌️), these were the kind of fun days that remind us why we love diving the Bay Islands.

Thanks to everyone who joined us, and a big shout-out to our boat crew for keeping everything running smoothly! 🚤

🪸 Flower, brain… or something else entirely?

Every ruffled "bloom" in this photo is a living animal. Meet the Spiny Flower Coral (M***a angulosa), one of the most striking corals on Roatan's reefs.

🔹 One of a kind. It's the only species in its genus anywhere in the world, and it lives only in the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas.
🔹 Soft outside, sharp inside. Under the fleshy tissue is a stony skeleton lined with spiny ridges. That's where its name comes from, and it's why you should never touch it.
🔹 Big polyps. Each "flower" is a single polyp up to 10 cm (4 in) across. A whole colony can grow to around 50 cm (20 in).
🔹 A night hunter. In the daytime it gets energy from tiny algae living in its tissue. At night, each polyp puffs up and shows a ring of sticky tentacles to catch plankton and even small shrimp.
🔹 No two look alike. Colonies come in grey, blue, green, pink and purple, like this beauty with its pink-tipped bumps.
🔹 It needs protecting. It's listed as Near Threatened worldwide. Our reefs here have also been dealing with Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease since 2020, so every healthy colony like this one matters.

💙 How you can help: keep good buoyancy, tuck in your gauges, keep your fins off the reef and wear reef-safe sunscreen.

👇 Had you ever spotted one of these before? Tell us in the comments!

Green or hawksbill? Either way, Roatán's reefs have a healthy population, some fun facts 🐢

Hawksbills live mostly off sponges, which are packed with tiny glass-like spikes. So yes, they basically eat glass for breakfast.
Green turtles are the biggest hard-shelled sea turtles, a 250–400 lbs grass-fed reef cruiser.
Sand temperature decides whether a baby turtle is male or female. Warm nests make females and cool nests make males. As the saying goes: hot chicks, cool dudes. 😎

Want to know how to tell them apart, which dive sites to find them at, and the turtle rules? The full guide is on our blog (link in bio).

🐠 Fish Fact Monday: The White-Spotted Filefish 🐠

If you've dived with us in Roatan, you've probably swum right past one of these. Here's why it's worth a second look:

✅ It changes its look in seconds. It can go from plain brown to dark with bold white spots almost instantly, which makes it one of the reef's best quick-change artists.

✅ It's a devoted partner. White-spotted filefish usually travel in pairs, so when you spot one, the other is rarely far away.

✅ It eats what others won't. Its diet includes sponges, sea fans, algae and even fire coral.

✅ You can tell males from females. Males have larger tail spines and bright orange bristle patches near the tail.

✅ It grows up to 46 cm (18 in).

✅ It's easy to find. It usually lives in 3–20 m (10–65 ft) around sea fans and sponges, so Open Water divers can see it too.

Want to find one yourself? Book a dive with us and ask your guide to point one out. Message us or visit the shop in Sandy Bay! 🤿🌊
