FEATURES MASAHIKO TANAKA 9th Dan Chief Instructor JTK. (Japan Traditional Karate).
This is a great story, from a true ‘Legend’ of Shotokan Karate-do. Here we learn a lot about Masahiko Tanaka 9th Dan, Chief Instructor of JTK (Japan Traditional Karate) both past and present. I think he's amazing for an 85 year old man, still travelling all over the world teaching his specific brand of Shotokan karate. Tanaka Sensei had a spectacular Competition career, he was nicknamed ‘Hasha’, meaning Champion. Masahiko Tanaka was one of the most technically gifted and dynamic karateka to come out of the JKA. He was blessed with speed and the ability to coordinate kicks and punches simultaneously. The former JKA Chief Instructor, Masatoshi Nakayama, made the following comment about him: “There are very few fighters who can use both hands and feet with as much skill as Masahiko Tanaka. His technique of executing kizami geri is beautiful.” Although Tanaka Sensei was adamant about maintaining the basic-fundamental techniques as taught at the JKA, he is very open-minded to any new ideas for fighting techniques and strategies as he himself has always been an innovator. But he is a firm believer in building a strong technical foundation through continual practice of the ‘Basics’ over a long period. Editor.

What fascinates me about his performance of kata is that his techniques, although not, so to speak, technically refined, exude life and naturalness. For me, this is what is, at the same time, beautiful and efficient. Overly polished techniques seem lifeless, rigid, and unusable. Of course, the form should be brought to perfection, but later that form should be restored to naturalness and given its own stamp. That's what Kase Sensei did with his karate. And this is really true mastership.
HEIAN OYO (平安応用) – a kata built from fragments of all Heian katas, created by Taiji Kase Sensei. It is a long-duration kata, with very few elements that demand isometric contraction, making it quite difficult to perform. When facing this kata for the first time, a karateka will notice fighting sequences that belong to a certain Heian kata. Even with few novelties, it interestingly covers all Heian katas, as some elements are connected differently and performed differently. The kata belongs to the Kase-Ha style and is not in the list of 26 Shotokan kata. Alongside Heian Oyo, Sensei Taiji Kase created several other kata, such as Tekki Oyo and Kase no Sanchin.
One idea: Exercise for karate stances. With slow breathing, move from position to position. Later, to make it more interesting, include the hands.
