Fencing in Crime Prevention - a Story from Kenya

Former gang member Mburu Wanyoike turned his life around through fencing and now empowers young people in Nairobi’s slums. At Tsavora Fencing Mtaani, he teaches discipline, respect, and hope.

Growing up in Nairobi’s informal settlements, many young people face extreme challenges: school is often interrupted, jobs are scarce, and gangs can seem like the only way forward. Mburu experienced this himself, and a life-changing moment made him reimagine his future.

Through fencing, he found discipline, purpose, and a new path. Today, at Tsavora Fencing, he gives young athletes from his old neighborhoods the same opportunity he received: to learn fencing, build character, and discover that there are alternatives to the cycle of poverty and violence. Their other program, called Books and Blades, combines sport and education, helping young people stay engaged both on and off the piste.

Mburu’s story shows how fencing can be more than a sport: it can be a lifeline for young people, helping them develop resilience, discipline, and hope.
