Barrel sponge spawning
Twice per year, this rare event takes place. Following the lunar cycle, usually between 5 and 22 days after the full moon, often in the early morning, sea sponges release s***m and eggs into the water column to maximize fertilization.
This is a collective event, and some sponges can release both gametes, as many species are hermaphroditic. In this video, you can see a male releasing s***m, which can last for up to an hour.
Once fertilization occurs, either inside the sponge or in the water column, the larvae drift with the currents until they find a suitable place to settle and grow, remaining there for the rest of their lives.
Some other interesting facts about sea sponges: they are among the earliest multicellular organisms in evolution and have been around for over 600 million years. They do not possess true organs or tissues and can live for thousands of years. The oldest recorded sea sponge is estimated to be around 2,300 years old, although most individuals you see are likely just a few hundred years old.
Before synthetic sponges were invented, natural sea sponges were widely collected and used for cleaning.

Leaf Scorpionfish
The Leaf Scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus) shares the same remarkable camouflage ability as other Scorpionfish species. What makes it unique, and what gives its name, is the way it mimics a drifting leaf, gently swaying side to side with the movement of the water
They often remain perfectly still, waiting patiently until an unaware prey comes too close. Their diet mainly consists of small fish and crustaceans. When the moment is right, they strike with incredible speed, opening their mouth in a rapid ambush and swallowing their prey almost instantly
Like other Scorpionfish, they possess venomous dorsal spines used for defense, so divers should admire but also be aware!
They can usually be found in shallow reef areas, hiding among sponges or between coral structures, often near schools of juvenile fish or glass fish where prey is abundant
Leaf Scorpionfish come in a variety of colors. If you spot one of a different color, you can add it to your underwater collection! They can appear white, black, red, pink, yellow or even green
Have you seen one before?
If so, which color did you find? Let us know in the comments!
