A wide-grip width on vertical pulling movements is often believed to target your lats more effectively. But current research suggests you can achieve similar lat activation by using a medium or even narrow-grip width. .
A 2014 study measured muscle activation on narrow-grip, medium-grip, and wide-grip lat pulldowns. No significant difference in lat activation was found [1]. Another study compared narrow-grip with wide-grip lat pulldowns and, again, no significant difference in lat activation [2]. .
Basically, you should not feel obliged to maintain a wide-grip width during vertical pulling movements if optimal lat growth is the goal, a narrower grip width works great as well [3]. Swipe left on the pictures for data & more details about the cited studies. .
