The History of Brazilian Jiu-jítsu
-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or, abroad, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ (spelled as jujitsu or jujutsu) is a Japanese martial art that essentially uses lever strikes, twists and inclusion to take an opponent to the ground as well. and master it. Literally, jū in Japanese means “softness”, “mildness”, and jutsu, “art”, “technique”. Hence his literal account, “gentle art”.
Its secular origin, as with almost all ancient martial arts, cannot be pinpointed precisely. Similar fighting styles were selected from different peoples, from India to China, in the 3rd and 8th centuries. What is known is that their environment of development and refinement was the schools of samurai, a warrior caste of feudal Japan.
The purpose of its creation was due to the fact that, on the battlefield or during any confrontation, a samurai could end up without their swords or spears, thus needing a method of defense without weapons. As the traumatic blows are not enough to reach the fighting space, since the samurai wear armor, as the falls and twists started for their efficiency. Jiu-Jitsu, thus, was born from its opposition to kenjitsu and other so-called rigid arts, in which fighters carried swords or other weapons.
The martial art gained new rumors when an instructor from the Japanese Kodokan school decided to conquer the world and prove the effectiveness of his chokes and arm styles against opponents of all sizes and styles: Mitsuyo Maeda, a son of a sumo wrestler born in the village of Funazawa, city of Hirosaki, Aomori, Japan, on November 18, 1878, and died in Belém do Pará on November 28, 1941.
In July 1914, the brave Japanese man of 1.64m and 68kg, according to reports, would land in Brazil to put down roots and change the history of the sport.
In 1917, a teenager named Carlos Gracie (1902–1994) saw for the first time, in Belém, a performance by the Japanese who was capable of dominating and submitting the giants of the region. A friend of his father, Gastão Gracie, Maeda agreed to teach the restless boy the art of defending himself. In his classes, he taught Carlos and other Brazilians – such as Luiz França, who would later become Oswaldo Fadda's master – the concepts of his art: standing or on the ground, the opponent's strength should be the weapon for victory; to get closer to the opponent, the use of low kicks and elbows should be the artifices before taking him to the ground. For evolution in training, he used randori, the real training with a partner.
A faithful student, Carlos Gracie embraced Jiu-Jitsu once and for all and, to the lament of his mother who dreamed of seeing more diplomats in the famous family, began to instill in his brothers the love of art. One of eight brothers (Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., George, Helena, Helio, Mary and Ilka), Carlos opened, in 1925, the first Jiu-Jitsu academy of the Gracie family. In the newspapers, the ad was a masterpiece of marketing: "If you want to have a broken arm, look for the Gracie gym".
The great master would have 21 children, 13 of whom would become black belts. Each member of the family then began to strengthen art and add another link to the current created by the great master Carlos, founder and guide of the clan, in addition to the first member of the family to launch himself into a struggle without rules, which he called "anything goes". It was in 1924, in Rio de Janeiro, when Carlos Gracie faced the docker Samuel, a well-known capoeira athlete.
Helio Gracie quickly became the highlight among the brothers, for the technical innovations he promoted as an instructor and for the indomitable spirit that did not match the skinny size. In line with Count Koma's tactics, the Gracie continued, in Rio de Janeiro, the challenges to capoeiristas, dockers and bullies of all origins and sizes. If standing up such brutes scared, on the ground they became an easy prey for the boats and bottlenecks that captured them. The family's victories in fights without rules were accumulating and turning into legends and headlines on the front pages.
In addition to the challenges, the championships between practitioners, with exclusive Jiu-Jitsu rules, were strengthened, supplied by dozens of different academies. In the 1960s, when Carlson Gracie had already taken the baton from his uncle Helio as the front line of the clan in MMA, an important step was taken towards the consolidation of sports Jiu-Jitsu. In 1967, the Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Guanabara, in Rio de Janeiro, was created, under the authorization of the National Sports Confederation of the country. Among the still primitive rules, maneuvers such as takedown, mounted on the front with two knees on the ground and grip from the back earned the competitor a point. The duration of the fights in the adult category was of five minutes, with extension of three. Jiu-Jitsu officially gained time and scores.
In the 1990s, art had a new boom. On two fronts: created by Rorion Gracie in 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship kick-started (on the chin) the media sport known today as MMA. From the idol Royce Gracie, and with the sweat shed by brothers and cousins apparently invincible like Rickson, Renzo, Ralph, Royler, Ryan, Carley and company, Jiu-Jitsu as a weapon of self-defense was consecrated.
On another front, Carlos Gracie Jr. followed his father's work in organizing championships and strengthening art as a regulated sport. Thus, in 1994, the International Jiu-Jitsu Federation was created, as well as the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Confederation, affiliated to the Brazilian Olympic Committee, which today promote tournaments for more than 3 thousand athletes from more than 50 countries, such as the World Championship, held annually since 1996.
A century after Conde Koma arrived in Brazil, our Jiu-Jitsu can now be practiced from Alaska to Mongolia, from Abu Dhabi to Japan.
JIU JITSU is a martial art, it was used for years by samurai in hand to hand combats.
