Sparring day
Technical sparring focusing on deflecting teep/push kicks and keeping your guard up against body and head kicks. Training your instincts, reflexes, and muscle memory are key to improving your technique in any style. Our un-trained, natural reactions are what result in eating strikes from our opponents. From here, we'll slowly incorporate light punches, leg kicks, then clinch. After multiple sessions, you'll quickly notice how your reactions to strikes becomes something you don't have to think about nearly as much. Then, you'll start using your techniques to set up creative counter strikes.
If you ever have the time and space, learn how to wrestle!
If you never had the chance to learn wrestling when you were still in school, it can be very hard to find instruction in wrestling. One of my favorite things to teach is single/double leg takedowns, as well as take down defense. It's mind blowing what it adds to a fight. There's been plenty of fights where a world class striker never gets to showcase their skills because they are either always getting taken down, or in constant takedown defense mode.
Ready for the new year? Who's gonna learn boxing and/or Muay Thai in 2022??
Ribs 90% healed. Couldn't wait anymore. Time to get back at it 💪
After the technique drills and pad work, you have to see how it really works. You never have to spar really hard, but you have to spar if you want to improve. Go at your speed/level, lose the egos, and control the power. If you've never sparred before, 20% speed/power will already be a bit shocking. Do that until you've worked out the jitters. Then, turn up the speed and keep the power low. Sometimes the wrong head movement will earn you a bit of a decent punch, maybe even a bit of black under your eye for a couple days. But that's kinda badass and everyone will tell you so. Most of us will not be career fighters, so sparring is our "competition". It's enough of a rush to spar with someone whose much better than you. Don't be scared. Just choose your sparring partners wisely 🙏💪
