Let's talk about tennis

Akane Yamaguchi just won the China Open Super 1000—the highest level on the BWF World Tour—and earned US$142,000.
Meanwhile, if Alex Eala lifts the Mubadala DC Citi Open trophy, a tournament that sits only at the third tier of women's tennis, she would take home US$225,000.
Let that sink in.
One of badminton's biggest titles pays significantly less than a WTA 500 event.
This isn't about disrespecting badminton or diminishing Akane's incredible achievement. It's a reminder of how vastly different the commercial landscapes of global sports are.
Badminton dominates across Asia. Tennis dominates the world.
The question is: should a champion at the highest level of badminton earn less than a champion at the third level of tennis?
What do you think—fair market value, or does badminton deserve much more?

A total of 34 tournaments have been held so far this season, including three Grand Slam events. Czechia leads the way with nine titles across all four tournament categories, making it the only nation to capture titles at every level in 2026.
The Philippines still has a chance to join the list, with Alex Eala set to compete during the Hard Court Swing—her favourite surface.

From a Little Girl in Pasig to Wimbledon's Biggest Stage
Alexandra "Alex" Eala was born into a sports-loving family in the Philippines. She first picked up a tennis racket at just four years old, learning the game on the shell courts of Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig under the guidance of her grandfather, Roberto "Bobby" Maniego, affectionately known as "Lolo Bob." From the very beginning, discipline became part of her daily life.
Her mother, Rizza Maniego-Eala, a former Southeast Asian Games swimming medalist, inspired her competitive spirit, while her older brother Miko shared her passion for tennis. By the age of ten, Alex's routine was already extraordinary—waking up before dawn for fitness training, attending school, and spending countless hours on the court every afternoon, chasing a dream that seemed almost impossible for a young girl from the Philippines.
At just 12 years old, Alex announced herself to the tennis world by winning the prestigious Les Petits As junior tournament in France. The victory earned her an opportunity that would change her life forever—a scholarship to the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain. At only 13, she left home and family behind to pursue her dream among the world's most promising young players.
Years of sacrifice, relentless training, and steady progress eventually transformed Alex into one of the brightest rising stars in women's tennis. She climbed the rankings, captured WTA 125 titles, and established herself as the first Filipina to be seeded at a Grand Slam.
Then came Wimbledon 2026.
Entering the tournament as the No. 29 seed, Eala won her first-ever Wimbledon main-draw match before producing the biggest victory of her career. On Centre Court, she stunned defending champion and World No. 3 Iga Swiatek 7-6(9), 6-2, becoming the first player from the Philippines—man or woman—to reach the second week of a Grand Slam in the Open Era. The emotional victory was the culmination of years of hard work that began on those humble shell courts in Pasig.
Although her remarkable run ended in the fourth round with a hard-fought three-set loss to Jasmine Paolini, Alex left Wimbledon as one of the tournament's biggest breakthrough stars. More importantly, she inspired an entire nation and proved that a little girl from the Philippines could compete with—and defeat—the very best in the world.
From early mornings with her grandfather to standing under the bright lights of Centre Court, Alex Eala's journey is a testament to courage, sacrifice, and unwavering belief. And at just 21 years old, her story is only beginning.

Tennis at the LA 2028 Olympics is scheduled to begin on July 19, 2028, just a few days after Wimbledon concludes. It will present a tough challenge for many of the world's top players, including Alexandra Eala, who will have to carefully decide where to focus her priorities.
Representing the Philippines at the Olympic Games has been one of Eala's childhood dreams. But at the same time, Grand Slams and the demanding WTA Tour are opportunities that are equally difficult to pass up.
If you were Alex Eala, which would you prioritize: Wimbledon or the 2028 Olympics? 🇵🇭🎾
