The Giant Gorgonian Sea Fan, is a species of soft coral. It is a fan-shaped colonial coral with several main branches and a latticework of linking smaller branches. Polyps (the living animal) are embedded in two rows along the branches of the coral. A polyp is very tiny and basically is a circle of tentacles, armed with nematocysts (stinging cells), that funnel prey to a mouth in the middle of the tentacles. The mouth is attached to a digestive sac.
The sea fan grows to 1.5 m (5 ft) tall and is variable in color, being whitish, yellow, pink or pale purple. The main branches are often purple and the fan is orientated at right angles to the current. It grows in shallow areas near the shore, where the wave action is strong and on deeper reefs ( to 50 feet) which experience strong currents. Polyps extend their eight tentacles, particularly at night, catching and paralzsing the plankton drifting by in the current with its stinging cells.
