PADI IDC vs SSI ITC: What’s the Real Cost of Becoming a Dive Instructor?

Choosing an instructor course is a big career decision; and the advertised course price is only part of the story.

We’ve put together a detailed comparison of the PADI IDC and SSI ITC, covering real course costs, included fees, annual renewals, crossover rules, rewards systems, teaching structure, and long-term career outlook.

At Project Laut, we train SSI instructors in Nusa Penida with small groups, transparent pricing, and a strong focus on becoming ready to teach not just ready to pass an evaluation. 😉

Not all Divemaster programs in Bali are built the same.

A lot of people compare courses based on price, speed, or whether an internship is “free.” The problem is that those things do not necessarily tell you much about the quality of the training.

If your goal is to become a capable dive professional, what matters more is the structure of the program, the quality of the teaching, the mentoring, and the kind of environment you are learning in.

We’ve just published a new guide:
How to Choose the Best Divemaster Course in Bali: What Actually Matters

Inside, we break down:
• what a strong Divemaster course should actually include
• Divemaster course vs internship
• how long proper training should take
• PADI vs SSI at professional level
• Nusa Penida vs calmer Bali locations
• red flags and common mistakes to watch for

If you are comparing Divemaster options in Bali, or know someone who is, this should be a useful read.

Introducing Euphyllia.

Named after one of our favourite hard coral species found here in Nusa Penida, Euphyllia baliensis, she marks a major new chapter for Project Laut.

Before welcoming guests aboard, “Euphy” was blessed by local priests on Penida, a meaningful beginning rooted in gratitude, respect, and local tradition.

Now, she is ready, and so are we!

With our own boat, we are excited to welcome not only professional and ecology trainees, but also fun divers and guests joining us for regular SSI courses in Nusa Penida.

A new boat. A new chapter. Same strong connection to the ocean.

Today, on a dive at PED in Nusa Penida, we found a newly sunk drift net.

At 12 metres, reef fish were already trapped - goatfish, rabbitfish, butterflyfish, damsels, lionfish and more. Many were already dead.

We followed the net down.

It went to 39 metres.

Fish after fish, coral torn apart, sponges cut clean through. We freed who we could. The dive lasted 80 minutes. We brought the net up, but it changed us.

In five years of diving here, this is the largest drift net we’ve ever seen.

Nusa Penida is a Marine Protected Area. This should not be happening here.

We remove fishing line weekly. Last week alone: a line with nearly 100 hooks.

Protection without enforcement is not protection.

Today, our only focus was getting this net out. But we shouldn’t be finding them here in the first place 😞

Thank you to our great team at Project Laut 💙
