We love turtles 💙

🌴Gili Air is known for turtles. everyone says it before you even get in the water. 🐢 🎥 I’ve filmed turtles in a lot of places and most of them are on the move, cruising the reef, surfacing, coming back down, but the ones here are super chill. 😴 📍They pick a spot and they stay there, and once you understand why, it makes a lot more sense. green turtles can slow their heart rate down to one beat every nine minutes at rest, which massively cuts their oxygen demand and lets them stay submerged for hours without needing to come up. ⬆️ They’re not being lazy, they’re being efficient in a way that took millions of years to figure out. ℹ️ But that same physiology is exactly what makes disturbance so dangerous. When a resting turtle gets startled by a diver getting too close, a snorkeler reaching out to touch it, fins kicking overhead its heart rate spikes, oxygen burns faster, and it’s forced to surface before it’s ready. ⚠️ Do that enough times in one dive and you’re not just stressing an animal, you’re disrupting a biological system that depends entirely on being left alone to work. More than 15 years ago, I experienced my first dive in the cold waters of Patagonia, and from that day on, I knew that I wanted to be underwater. Teaching diving is something I truly enjoy. 🤿 I love seeing how students transform underwater becoming more relaxed, confident, and aware of themselves. I always encourage respect for the environment and explain how small actions can make a big difference in conservation. I prefer slow dives, taking time to observe every detail of the reef. I can easily spend several bars of air just observing a pufferfish or an octopus.🐙 🙌 My recommendation is simple: appreciate every single dive. Welcome to the underwater world and diving family✨🤝

‼️Meet Esteban‼️ Dive master at DPM diving Gili Air ☺️ 👋I’m from Santiago, Chile. I discovered the underwater world at 12 years old in the cold waters of the Humboldt Current. Since then, every summer I try to spend as much time as possible diving and learning. 🤿I love teaching because I can transmit my passion for diving, marine life, and the environment. I feel that I have a good connection with people who are just starting with diving, and I love seeing the happy faces after a good dive. 🧐Actually, I’m a real macro nerd haha. My favorite animal in the world are nudibranchs and all the very small underwater life, but I’m also a big fan of big animals and reefs. I fall in love every time I see an eagle ray or a shark swimming in the blue.💙 ‼️My advice for you is never stop being curious and always be humble. The ocean can surprise you in many ways, and the diving world teaches us how to become part of this world and be more conscious of the environment. 🏄‍♂️If I’m not at the shop, I’m probably surfing some waves or spending good times with my family and friends at the beach watching the sunset.☀️
