In the thick of Sunday's 59,000-strong entry field for the 2026 TCS London Marathon was Ballymore Cobh AC's Niall O'Sullivan.

Hundreds of thousands came out to watch these teak-tough athletes negotiate the course and witness the craic, composure and carnage unfold as the kilometres went by.

This battle-hardened warrior of a man performed heroically in the harrowing London heat and humidity, all the while negotiating a troublesome injury that had thrown up doubts whether he'd even manage to make the start line of this highly sought-after and prestigious race, in addition to the poor guy's watch having a stroke and dying on him 24 kilometres into the race.

Niall's race plan was, in any event, exquisitely executed, evenly pacing the entire 42.2 kilometres to an impressive 3:18:23 finish time.

24 hours aprés-race and the poor man is now minus several toe nails, hobbling around London seeking out a good podiatrist, with one gleaming and well-earned TCS London Marathon medal hanging from his neck. From the man himself: " Don't forget to wrap your toes!"

Our sport is other sports’ punishment 😄

Laps? Yes, please. Extra laps? Oh goody gumdrops.

Ballymore Cobh AC had a pair of track-mad athletes revving their engines and raring for road at MTU yesterday evening.

The Cork County Graded League (Day 1 of 5), sponsored by John Buckley Sports, was the first of 5 summer meets held by the Cork Athletics County Board at MTU, constituting both track and field events and open to members of all athletics clubs within the county.

Molly, from our Juvenile section, took on the power and might of several county Seniors in the unforgiving 200m event, where it’s basically an all-out sprint and one feels the burn mere seconds into the race. A phenomenal performance was put in by this wonderful young lady.

This author hadn’t had the pleasure of witnessing Molly compete in a couple of years and it’s a fair assessment to state that his jaw dropped to the floor when he saw the pace at which she raced throughout.

Molly then completed her night’s events with a very strong showing in the highly technical event that is the shot put.

Adept and equally comfortable at both field events and track events, this admirable club member, who already boasts a fistful of para-athletic international medals, is one to keep an eye on as she continues to work studiously developing into a fantastic athlete and such a well-rounded young person.

Shane Meyler gave a good account of himself in the mixed 3,000 metres, knocking a number of seconds off his pre-race estimated finish time and finishing 2 seconds behind the athlete in front, which made Molly very happy, as this athlete happened to be her Dad, Cornelius, a fine St. Finbarr's AC athlete who also coaches our Juvenile section.

A lovely evening’s athletic fare was had all around, with more to come next month. Stay tuned!

🇦🇹 Club Trip to Vienna 🇦🇹

Vienna: Home to the great Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, Schubert, Wagner, Freud, the noble Habsburg dynasty... plus a plane-load of Ballymore Cobh athletes touching down for a weekend of cantering, culture, coffee houses agus craic.

Two races, a full and a half marathon, took place simultaneously in zero wind, glorious sunshine and a balmy 22°.

Read on for the gorey details, beginning with the full 42.2 kilometres:

He's been walking around on a cloud, like Maria in West Side Story! And so he should be. A fantastic PB ⭐️ earned by one of our most diligent athletes, the always pleasant and constantly courteous Peter Howie.

A breath of fresh air since beaming down to Ballymore Cobh from whencever she previously existed, Kate Conroy proved she also possesses serious grit in addition to formidable fitness, landing a sub-4 hour PB ⭐️ absolutely superb at such a young age and in far from ideal marathon conditions.

She gets on with it, no fuss, non-plussed. That's yet another superbly ran marathon in the bag for the lady for all occasions and distances, the one and only Jenny Costa. Some woman, she is!

Special guest star on the day was the forner BCAC man and current Canterbury Harriers athlete, Niall Kelly, who hooked up with his hometown buddies for the weekend. With Mad Max mode switched to ON, Niall put down a phenomenal effort to secure a sub-3 hour marathon time.

Leading the charge for the club in the half marathon was the venerable Andrew Hogan, 93. (That’s minutes running, not the lad's age).

Shane Meyler started out so well, then in the latter stages folded like a Temu deck chair. He's not getting any younger, is there any hope for him?

All the girls in the club can't stop talking about him. Have you looked into his eyes? It's like staring into the ocean. Has to be... Alan Stack. He runs, too.

Cruising down Ventura Highway in the sunshine was the Stephen Pender Experience (SPE). All he appeared to have on his mind was where he would find his next apple strudel.

Top of the pops in the female standings, Triona Hayes put in a barnstorming performance and all credit to this very impressive lady.

Running like her ex was chasing her, Deirdre Meyler made a great day of it altogether, the smile never leaving her face as this lady rose to the occasion as she so often does.

Also beaming from ear to ear was Leilia Pender, another 21 kilometre race chalked down with her usual good grace, style and wit to match.

A sincere thank you to the large support crew entourage who accompanied all of our athletes and provided such welcome support and encouragement throughout the route.

Marathon:
Peter Howie (3:18:25) (PB)
Kate Conroy (3:59:34) (PB)
Jenny Costa (4:01:29)

Half Marathon:
Andrew Hogan (1:33:59)
Shane Meyler (1:37:42)
Alan Stack (1:42:05)
Stephen Pender (1:44:40)
Triona Hayes (1:54:41)
Deirdre Meyler (2:00:54)
Leilia Pender (2:00:55)

Well done to all you sweaties, sorry, sweeties. 🧡🖤

Cork BHAA PwC 5K Race
Wed 25-Apr-2026

Amongst the whopping 870 participants in this 5k race, (871 if you count the howler of a wind blowing on the night), were a twosome of talented Ballymore Cobh AC athletes.

5k, 21k, Y2K, there ain’t nothing to hold this woman back.

As we’ve come to expect from a lady who is no stranger to putting her shoulder to the wheel, Marie McCarthy put in a stellar performance on the night.

Bearing testament to this was a sublime time recorded of 29:17 securing a very admirable 5th place in her age category.

Next up:
We saw him carrying a deer he’d shot over his shoulder last week. By God, he’d make a great Thor.

Keeping it between the lines was the one and only Bobby Anglim with a stupendous effort of 21:03.

You’ll always know there’s some other serious heavy hitters in a race when Bobby hits 3rd place in his age category.
Youngfellas by comparison though, as he’ll be in a new category next year!

Bobby, you’re such an inspiration. Will you be our Dad?

Marie and Bobby, very well done to the pair of you. Yiz are mad for road.
