As we respond to the biodiversity crisis, well-planned forests play an important role in protecting and restoring nature. They provide valuable habitats for plants, birds, insects and other wildlife and support healthier, more resilient ecosystems.

Summer is an excellent time to maintain and improve your agroforestry system.

With good ground conditions and favourable weather, now is an ideal opportunity to undertake management works supported under Woodland Improvement Scheme Element 2 – Agroforestry Maintenance.

The scheme supports a wide range of operations aimed at improving the quality and value of agroforestry trees while continuing agricultural production on the land.

Eligible operations include:
🌳Agroforestry Management Plans
🌳Formative shaping and pruning
🌳Thinning and re-spacing to promote growth
🌳Deer and forest protection measures
🌳Replacement of support stakes and tree protection measures

A fixed grant of €1,200 per hectare is available to support eligible agroforestry maintenance works.

Taking action during the summer months can help ensure trees continue to develop into high-quality timber while delivering the many environmental and farming benefits that agroforestry provides.

Contact your Registered Forester or Teagasc Advsior to learn more about the scheme and eligibility requirements.
