We had a great turnout for the launch of our new Bio-Diversity Educational Programme by the Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport Charlie McConalogue TD.
Also present at the launch were the Mayor of Athlone-Moate Municipal District Cllr Vinny McCormack, Cllr Frankie Keena, CEO of Scouting Ireland Sean Sheehan, Lakelands Scout County Commissioner Deirdre O'Brien McGivney, Tubberclair GAA Chairperson Adrian Dolan, representatives from Scouting Ireland Western Province, 2nd Westmeath Scouts, 1st/10th Westmeath Mullingar Scout Group, 9th Westmeath Milltownpass, Glasson Girl Guides along with other community representatives, friends and neighbours.
At Portlick, we believe it is essential that young people understand, experience, and learn to protect nature. Our programme is designed to help them appreciate the importance of biodiversity in a hands-on and engaging way.
We are extremely fortunate to have a campsite nestled in Portlick Forest, adjacent to the beautiful shoreline of Lough Ree. This natural setting provides the perfect environment for outdoor learning and adventure.
Activities at Portlick Scout Campsite:
We offer a wide range of land and water activities, including:
• Water activities: kayaking, water slide, and water gun battles
• Land activities: climbing wall, gladiator challenge, zipline, crate stacking, obstacle course, tag archery, and football fusion
• Outdoor skills: orienteering, pioneering, backwoods cooking, and campcraft
Our Mission:
Our mission is to provide a safe, supportive environment where young people can enjoy outdoor adventure and camping, guided by trained staff and supported by a dedicated volunteer management team.
Community Impact:
This year, approximately 5,000 young people will visit Portlick Scout Campsite. We are proud to contribute to the local economy by:
• Providing part-time employment opportunities for young people
• Using local services and suppliers
• Attracting thousands of visitors to the region
We sincerely thank all those who support our work, including Scout Groups from across the island of Ireland, Girl Guides, Youth Groups, Schools, and the local community.
Special thanks to our hardworking staff, reliable service providers, and Scouting Ireland. Finally, we are deeply grateful to our volunteer board, whose dedication and passion make Portlick Scout Campsite a welcoming and exciting destination for all.
