A photgraph of a mother and her child, Palestine, 1920.
Dressed in traditional thobe decorated with Palestinian tatreez embroidery, she was photographed by Khalil Raad.
Originally from Lebanon, Raad was known as Palestine’s first Arab photographer and settled in Talibiyya until his family was forced to flee in 1948. Much of his work was saved from destruction in 1948 by an Italian friend of Raad’s, who smuggled more than a thousand of his photographic plates across no-man’s land to safety, making several trips under cover of darkness with his precious cargo.
