For this week's , we are taking a trip back to 1962 for a truly unique piece of Wicklow GAA history!

Pictured here is the Forestry College Senior Hurling Champions team of 1962.

The Story Behind the Photo
This wasn’t your typical club team. Back then, the State Forestry Training College was based at Shelton Abbey in Arklow. Young men from all over Ireland came to study there.

Because they had a high concentration of athletic students from traditional hurling strongholds like Tipperary, Cork, Limerick, and Waterford, they pooled their talent, entered the Wicklow championship, and went all the way to claim the 1962 Senior Hurling title!

It is essentially an "All-Ireland select" team playing under the Wicklow banner, complete with legendary Kerry football icon Tom Prendergast (back row), who won All-Irelands with the Kingdom but picked up a Wicklow hurling medal during his college days here!

The Lineup:
Back Row (L to R): Murt Duggan (Laois), Dermot O'Connor (Kerry), Mossy Walsh (Cork), P. O'Brien (Galway), G. Hipwell (Kildare), Tom Prendergast (Kerry), F. Hogan (Tipperary), Liam O'Connor (Kerry), S. Casey (Cork), Mick Burke (Tipperary), P. Quinlan (Tipperary).

Front Row (L to R): Sean Twomey (Cork), Paddy McAuliffe (Limerick), Peter O'Dwyer (Tipperary), Derry O'Donovan (Cork), George Harley (Waterford), Bill Walsh (Waterford), Michael Fogarty (Tipperary), Michael McNamara (LimerickGAA), Richard Delahunty (Tipperary).

Missing from Photo: Leo Collins (Tipperary), Sean Grahan (Westmeathgaaofficial), P.J. O'Donoghue (Tipp).

Do you recognise any family members, neighbours, or legends of the game in this photo? Let us know in the comments, and feel free to tag anyone with connections to this historic team! 👇

Wicklow GAA wishes to express our deepest condolences to our Senior Hurling Captain, Pádraig Doran, and the Deegan family on the sad and unexpected passing of Pádraig’s grandfather, Peter Deegan (Carnew).

As a mark of respect, tonight’s Senior Hurling League Final has been postponed.

Peter was the very heartbeat of his community, a beloved Main Street butcher, bookmaker, and a true legend of Carnew Emmets GAA. A dual star, Peter played a key role in Carnew’s historic first-ever Senior Hurling title in 1965 and lined out in the 1971 Senior Football Final. Decades later, his sporting legacy came full circle when he proudly watched his grandchildren, Pádraig and Larry, win the County Championship in 2025.

While fiercely proud of his club, Peter’s greatest pride was always his family, where his warmth, humor, and love of sport live on in the next generation.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Peter’s wife Úna, his children Eileen, Liz, Loughlin, and Catherine, his grandchildren Pádraig, Máire, Robert, Danny, Larry, and Emma, his great-grandchildren, the wider Deegan family, and everyone at Carnew Emmets GAA.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

What a time to be a Wicklow supporter! Honestly, that final two minutes on East Coast FM must be absolute gold dust.

To pull off a 12 point turnaround in the Tailteann Final at Croke Park is the stuff of pure legend. From being 12 points down at the break, looking dead and buried, to outscoring Down 1-17 to 0-6 in the second half, it is easily one of the greatest modern comebacks GAA Headquarters has ever witnessed.

Between the sheer noise of the Wicklow crowd (the 16th man indeed!) and the beautiful, unfiltered local passion of Michael and Daniel on the mic, that recording deserves to be preserved in the county archives. You can only imagine the absolute bedlam in the commentary box when the ho**er was blown to seal the 1-21 to 2-16 victory!

Oisín McConville and the lads have given the Garden County a day, and a trophy, that will be talked about for decades. The party in Wicklow is going to roll on for a long, long time, and a golden ticket to the 2027 All-Ireland SFC is the ultimate cherry on top.
Up the Garden! 🔵🟡
