CAPTAINS PRIZE 2026 - Well done to Brendan Duggan who was the winner of the Captains Prize for 2026. Brendan had a formidable 57 nett at the end of the first 18 and maintained his nerve to finish on top after 27. To make his win all the more remarkable, Brendan was a member of the Men's Beginners group in 2026 and only obtained his first golf handicap this year. The prizes were presented shortly after the conclusion of the playoff by Men's Captain Paddy McLoughlin. CONNACHT SHIELD - Well done to our Connacht Shield team, captained by Keith Dowling who pulled off a fantastic victory against the nationally renowned Co Sligo Golf Club (Rosses Point).
Their course is often described as one of the top 10 courses in the county and is such a challenge that they have a steady stream of American golfers booking months in advance to play it every Summer. The club itself has over 10 times our membership. However, none of this seemed to matter a jot to the 2 pairings from Boyle who went down and beat 2 pairings from Rosses Point on their own course. Well done to the combinations of Lee McKillen and Niall O'Donohoe and that of team Captain Keith Dowling and Mark Whelan who were the 2 teams who won away from home. The Rosses Point teams won a match in Boyle but Vincent Egan and Pat Brogan halved their match. The overall fixture finished 2.5 to Boyle vs 1.5 to Rosses Point. Good luck to our lads in the next round.

SIXES - Boyle hosted our round of the children's Sixes competition last week and it was a huge success. Boyle tied for top score with Tubbercurry with Tubbercurry claiming the league points for 1st place on countback. Thanks to all who helped out, especially Bernie Kemple and Paddy McLoughlin who stepped in to help with card marking at short notice.
Our next fixture is on August 10th in Carrick On Shannon Golf Club.

MENS CAPTAINS PRIZE - The most important date of the annual golfing calendar for the men of the club is the Men's Captains Prize, which takes place next Sunday the 9th of August. This years Captain is Paddy McLoughlin. The competition will be played in its usual format of an 18 Hole Strokeplay with the top 15 competing in a 9 hole playoff that evening and the presentation of prizes taking place after the conclusion of the play off.
There will also be a Captains Scramble on the preceding Friday evening, all members make and female welcome to play.

GOLFER OF THE YEAR - The current standings in the Order of Merit for Golfer of the Year were published this week and a certain P.Conroy of Forest View, Boyle was no doubt smiling. Pat is sitting pretty with 248 points with his nearest placed rival Owen Garvin on 170. Mark Whelan is in 3rd place on 158 and Jason Beirne has 154.

BANK HOLIDAY COMPETITION - At the time of writing we are planning for an Open Shambles competition to be played over the Bank Holiday Weekend. Further details to follow.

OPEN WEEK - Our 2026 Open Week was a huge success again with great numbers participating in fabulous weather conditions. Ladies Day was a particular highlight with over 60 competitors participating. All prizes for the week were presented by the 2 Captains, Michelle and Paddy after the Friday night Scramble event.
Thanks to all who played, and also to our hard working Open Week committee of Captains Paddy McLoughlin and Michelle Quinn and Competition Secretaries Mandy Toolan and Lorcan Egan. A special thanks to all who provided sponsorship, including individuals and neighbouring Golf Clubs and most especially the business community in the local area whom we ask you to support. A list of our sponsors is included below.

INTERCLUBS - Huge congratulations to Mark Whelan's Cecil Ewing team who pulled off a real underdog win against Strandhill Golf Club this past weekend. Pat Conroy and Paddy McLaughlin won at home in Boyle 4 and 3. Killian Egan and Frank Flanagan also won at home 4 and 3. The deciding match was that featuring Lewis Shaw and Owen Garvin who were 1 up with 1 to play in Strandhill which meant Boyle had 2.5 matches out of 4 and had thus won the overall fixture. Kevin O'Connor and Colin Garvin were all square when they were called in so they could well have gone on to also claim some points if they had finished out. Best of luck to Mark and team in the next round.

LADY CAPTAINS DAY - Lady Captain Michelle Quinn's weekend of events was a great success starting with a well attended Scramble on the Friday, including a number of debutants. Well done especially to John Carty for getting a prize in his first adult competition.
On Saturday there was a competition for the Lady Beginners/Improvers with Valerie O'Donohoe and Rachel Healy taking 1st and 2nd place respectively.
The main event was of course Lady Captains Day itself. The scoring was unusually strong considering the unseasonably windy conditions. The presentation of prizes was helped in the clubhouse immediately following the Lady Captains Dinner. Michelle thanked all who contributed to the success of her weekend and those whoa have contributed to the club more generally throughout the year. Nora Pat Stewart was the winner of this years Lady Captains Prize.
Winners - Lady Captains Prize -1st Nora Pat Stewart, 2nd Sinead O'Donohoe, Gross Tish Perry, 3rd Catherine Roddy.
Lady Captains 9 Hole -1st Carmel Beirne, 2nd Denise O'Dowd.

LADY CAPTAINS DAY - The most important day of the year for the ladies section of the club is Lady Captains Day, which takes place next Sunday. This years Lady Captain is Michelle Quinn. As well as the main event itself (which will be in the usual 18 Hole Strokeplay format), there will be the Lady Captains Scramble on the Friday night, which is open to all club members, with and without a handicap. There will also be a Lady Beginners competition next Saturday. Presentation of prizes will be after the Lady Captains Dinner function on Sunday evening in the clubhouse.

CHALLENGE CUP - Well done to our Challenge Cup team captained by Bernie Kemple who put in a creditable performance. Well done to Strokestown Golf Club also on their successful hosting.

MIXED FOURSOMES - Best of luck to our Mixed Foursomes team who take on Strandhill Golf Club on Monday the 29th.

SIXES - Also in interclub golf, good luck to our Juniors who make the trip to Tubbercurry Golf Club for their first Sixes fixture of the year on Monday the 29th.

DUCK RACE - The fundraising committee express a huge thank you to everyone who bought ducks, sold ducks, volunteered on race day, and shared positive feedback for our inaugural duck race fundraiser.

The committee is absolutely delighted with the success of this fundraiser, the atmosphere was brilliant, the face painting and music adding to the vibe. The event was very well received by the community of Boyle and solidifies our intention to make the golf club more visible in the community and the game of golf available to all.

1003 ducks raced down the river with some deciding to take a short rest in the weirs, others deciding to swim further than intended. But, be assured that with nets and kayaks all ducks were retrieved and are currently resting up until training commences again in March 2027.

The winners were:
1st Leanne Connolly
2nd Josie Reid,
3rd Mick O,Dowd
4th Ronan Nerney
5th Gerard Mullaney

Our first ever fundraising Duck Race was a huge success and a credit to all involved, especially the Duck Race supremo herself, Susan O'Mahoney who came up with the concept originally and saw it through to its successful conclusion. Susan had a capable committee with her including Paddy McLoughlin, Karl Keenan, Michelle Quinn, Regina McLoughlin, and Paul Brown. We were especially grateful for the help received on the day from many people who are not members of the Golf Club but many of whom who are active members and volunteers in other clubs within the town. Because of this it seemed appropriate that the winner of the 1st Prize was Leanne Connolly, someone who has put in great work with Boyle Celtic in recent years. 2nd Josie Reid, 3rd Michael O'Dowd, 4th Ronan Nerney, 5th Gerard Mullaney.
Thanks to all who bought ducks and to Cecil Tivnan for his sponsorship of a spot prize.
