Buncrana Golf Club, Donegal. Buncrana Golf Club has been in existence since 1890 and is Ireland's Oldest 9 Hole Links Golf course. Fitzpatrick, J. Doherty (W), J. Longwill (B), D. Hegarty, C.

The Buncrana Golf Club has been in existence since 1890, when the previous 3-4 Hole course, that was in existence since circa 1834, was extended to a 9 Hole Course and named The Buncrana Golf Club. The name was changed to, Buncrana Municipal Golf Club, in 1944 after the Buncrana Urban District Council purchased the property from the then English Landowner and the property was put in the trust of the Buncrana Municipal Golf Committee for the purpose of making Golf facilities available to the local community. The Buncrana Municipal Golf Club was affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1951 and in 1995 the name of the club was changed once again to the Buncrana Golf Club. The committee are in the process of researching the history of the golf course and history would show that golf was first played on these grounds from around 1834, when a number Golf Holes were shaped into the existing landscape, for use by the local gentry, British Army personnel stationed in the town and the traveling sailors who frequented Buncrana Pier. This would make the club the oldest 9-hole links golf club in Ireland. In the early 70’s the members of the club at that time took it upon themselves to construct a clubhouse, as the premises they had at the time were very outdated. The premises at the time were constructed out of a tin frame with a wooden finish internally and on stormy days the sand from the shore would blow through the premises. Members in the early 70’s constructed the then new clubhouse on a voluntary basis in their spare time, members like M. Harvey, J. Mc Grory (L), N. Doherty (S), J. Mc Grory and H. Doherty. These are only a few of the names involved at the time but it was the dedication and resolve of these members that ensured the existence and continuance of the clubhouse and golf course in general. Over the years the club was very fortunate to enlist the services of some very hard working committee members who maintained the clubhouse and course to a high standard. One of these members, who went on to become the clubhouse caretaker in later years was Neil Doherty (sonny) who did a tremendous amount of work for the club and the members. Unfortunately Neil had to retire in 2001, but the club was extremely lucky to secure the services of Jim Doherty (Wh**ey) as caretaker. Jim managed to maintain the friendly welcome, which is always on offer to members and visitors alike to the Buncrana Golf Club. Jim retired in 2011.

The competition will now take place on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th December.

Unfortunately, due to the stormy weather forecast for this weekend, the Aileen Hallinan Memorial Teams of 4 Scramble, in aid of the Donegal Hospice, scheduled for today Saturday 24th and tomorrow Sunday 25th October, has been postponed.
The competition will now take place on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th December.
COURSE UPDATE – 8:15 A.M.
At present, conditions at Buncrana Golf Club are relatively mild, with only light showers, and the course remains open for play. However, with stormy weather forecast to arrive later, conditions will be monitored closely. Should the weather deteriorate, a decision will be made regarding a possible course closure, with the safety of all golfers being our priority.
If the weather conditions turn out to be better than predicted, golfers will still have the opportunity to get out on the course and submit a card in the Annual Qualifying Competition for the Christmas Hamper 2026.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the postponement of the scramble and thank everyone for their understanding and continued support of this very worthwhile cause.

WINTER LEAGUE - LEADERBOARD
Here is the Winter League Leaderboard after 3 weeks of Qualifying and with just one more round to go things are beginning to shape up.
The final week qualifying takes place next weekend 31st October & 1st November when Pairs can try and replace one of their earlier round scores to see if it can move them up the all important leaderboard into the Qualifying positions.
**Remember** NO Winter League Qualifying this weekend as it is the annual Aileen Hallinan Memorial Open Teams of 4 SCRAMBLE in aid of the Donegal Hospice.

Qualifying has now begun for this year CHRISTMAS HAMPER.
Cards can be taken out 7 days a week and even in-conjunction with your Winter League card if the format suits.
Entry is €5 and Re-Entry is €3
As usual once you have €10 paid in attempting to qualify you will gain entry to the Non Qualifiers Hamper - if you fail to qualify for the Hamper proper.

We only lost 7 of our remaining 84 entrants during week 2 fixtures. Meaning we still have 77 entrants now progressing on to Game week 3 this coming weekend.
So after after just 2 week we have lost 55 of our original entrants.

WINTER LEAGUE WEEK 3 (2 Ball SCRAMBLE)
The father-and-son combination of Barry and Shay Kearney stole the show in the third round of qualifying in Buncrana Golf Club’s Winter League, producing an excellent performance to claim the weekly prize in the scramble format. With many pairings finding the scramble format more challenging than expected, Barry (10) and Shay (20) made it look easy as they combined experience, youthful confidence and some excellent golf to post one of the standout scores of the weekend. Playing on Saturday morning, the Kearney’s showed just how effective a father-and-son partnership can be. Barry’s experience complemented Shay’s fearless approach and together they put together a superb round of one over gross, returning an impressive 41 Stableford points. Their card featured three birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars, demonstrating the consistency that proved crucial in a competitive round. The pair secured the weekly prize on a countback, thanks to an outstanding back nine of 22 points. Buncrana Golf Club has always been keen to promote family participation in the game, particularly encouraging fathers and sons to play together and enjoy the social and sporting benefits that golf offers. The success of Barry and Shay Kearney is a great example of this club philosophy in action, demonstrating how golf can bring generations together, create lasting memories and foster a lifelong love of the game. Their Winter League victory makes their achievement all the more special and reflects the club’s commitment to making golf an enjoyable and inclusive sport for families throughout the local community.
Tiarnan MacLochlainn (23) and Brandon MacLochlainn (24) again finished runners-up after also returning an excellent 41 points. However, their challenge was undone by the 18th hole, where they could manage only one point, leaving them just short of taking the weekly honours.
There will be a break in the Winter League this weekend as attention turns to the annual Aileen Hallinan Memorial Teams of Four Scramble, which takes place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October and this competition will be held in aid of Donegal Hospice.
The final round of Winter League qualifying will take place on Saturday 31st October and Sunday 1st November, with the additional week providing an opportunity for teams to catch up on missed rounds or improve an existing score. Pairings will be free to play whichever format they choose in an effort to strengthen their qualifying position ahead of the next stage of the competition.
