Our Junior A season ended in heartbreak yesterday as we were defeated by O’Hanrahans by 1-16 to 3-08. We got off to the dream start when Cillian Moore won the throw in and Tom Sheehan delivered the perfect long ball for Marc Mulhall to finish to the net. Conor Buggy then converted an excellent free from a tight angle on his weak side and we were well settled into the game. The loss of Tom Sheehan through injury was a significant loss for us. As all finals go, the opponents were going to hit back, and they scored a fabulous two pointer and another couple of points to nudge themselves ahead. Cormac McConnon improvised on his solo attack to score a very good point and marc Mulhall added a point as he ran at the heart of the Blues defence. With 28 minutes gone, we led by 1 point but the eventual winners finished strongly. They kicked another 2 pointer, then got in for a goal and Lee Walker finished the first half with a 2 pointer free. We trailed 1-10 to 1-03 at half time but this wasn’t going to phase this special team.
Lee Gordon used his experience in the second half and clipped over two points. Cillian Moore powered into the game with an excellent point and Conor Buggy was unerring from placed balls. Trailing by 8, Marc Mulhall gave us a lifeline with a second goal and suddenly, we had momentum. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t find that goal that we needed and missed some chances. We were awarded a penalty that Lee Gordon converted but time was just about up. The end of the game was heartbreak as our luck just ran out in search of that last goal and we lost out by 2 points.
Nonetheless, it was a season of highs and lows. This team stared down the banks of relegation from the league but stuck to their guns. They battled exceptionally hard in every game and we won’t forget those victories in the quarter and semi finals. For many of these players, it was their first year at adult football and they will take great learnings for next year, in this great competition that prepares them for senior football.
Special thanks to the management team of Ronan Dempsey, Jeff Deering, Brian Farrell, John O’Gorman, Paul Tracey, Lee Dowling and Physio Brian Condon for elevating this setup to a new level and setting the foundations for this team to build on. Roll on 2027
