🏀 U16 & U18 Boys & Girls

Unfortunately, beginners cannot be accepted at these age groups
U16 – Born 2011–2012
U18 – Born 2009–2010

“The Cavan Lakers Academy Programme”

As many of you know, Cavan Lakers has experienced incredible growth over the past number of seasons. More children than ever before want to play basketball, and that's something we're incredibly proud of.

With that growth comes new challenges.

Our ambition has always been to provide every child with the opportunity to learn, develop and enjoy basketball, while also ensuring our competitive teams continue to compete at the highest level possible.

To achieve this, we're introducing our new Academy Programme for U12 and U14 players.

How will it work?

Every new and existing U12 and U14 player will begin the season in the "Academy Programme".

During the opening weeks, players will take part in training sessions and assessments.

Following this assessment period, players who demonstrate the appropriate development, ability and readiness for competitive basketball will be selected for one of our competitive league teams.

Players who are not selected at that stage will remain in the Academy Programme, where they will continue to receive quality coaching, develop their skills and enjoy regular basketball throughout the season.

The Academy Programme is not a short-term initiative—it will continue throughout the season, providing an ongoing pathway for every player to develop and progress.

We believe this approach gives more children the opportunity to enjoy basketball while creating a clear development pathway into competitive basketball when they are ready.

🙌 We Need Your Help 🙌

The success of this “New Academy Programme” depends entirely on the support of our volunteers.

As our membership continues to grow, we need more people to help us deliver training sessions, coach teams and support the club on and off the court.

Without additional coaches, assistant coaches and volunteers, it simply won't be possible to continue offering basketball opportunities to the number of children currently wishing to play.

In that situation, the club would unfortunately have to return to a more traditional structure where numbers are capped and only a limited number of competitive teams can be entered—for example, two U12 Boys teams (Lions and Cubs). Trials would then be held, and only those selected would continue with the club.That is not the future we want for Cavan Lakers.

Our vision is to create opportunities, not limit them.

If you have ever thought about getting involved, now is the perfect time. Whether you have basketball experience or simply want to support young people in our community, there is a role for everyone.
