Its been ages since my last post (I'm rather excited posting again actually!!) After a long time at Carton House I have had the great fortune to be employed as activities manager at the K Club in Straffan since early this year. As part of my role I manage the fishery there - we have 2km of the River Liffey flowing through the grounds and quite a number of lakes.
There is currently excellent fly fishing for pike on both river and lake settings, we also have roach, perch, carp and other coarse species and wild brown trout on the river when in season. The lakes are also stocked with both brown and rainbow trout to 5lb,
Here's a few photos I took today (bear in mind that its the middle of December - it looks much prettier in Spring / Summer).
Sooo... If anyone is looking for a last minute Christmas pressie for the fisherman in their life why not get a voucher to fish at the K Club? It costs €110 pp for a 3 hour session with ghillie and equipment included.
Likewise anyone missing wetting a line during the river 'close season' who enjoys fly fishing for trout or anybody looking to start the fascinating journey into fly fishing for pike should look no further.

Never mind me or the splashes from this portly wild brown trout who, last night, was deceived by my new sedge pattern - isn't the River Liffey just beautiful...

A bank holiday morning and a new fly pattern I thought up imitating Sedge pupa working out really well - boy was I a happy little camper on the river yesterday.

5 mins paddle upstream from home right now, good hatch of fly but nothing rising yet...

Little more than 'tiddlers' really but I couldn't have been any happier on the river yesterday trout fishing with one of my own (as always!) dry flies - a size 16 thorax hackled cdc dun - trim the hackle short underneath & you've a little cracker of a fly for various olive hatches throughout the season.

It can be funny sometimes when fly fishing with Nymphs, you think your fly has snagged on something on the river bed when that 'snag' turns out to be a beautiful wild brown trout. Well that was the case for American fly fisherman Mark Flanagan this morning - delighted for him - he's a lovely guy

Hello Mr Trout, it's been a while and while you may not agree, it's been far too long!

A quick photo before releasing my 1st big brown trout of the season earlier today, opening day 2021.

I think there is always a sense of purpose & great excitement when checking your tackle the night before fishing but tonight, on the eve of the new trout season there is also another factor, it's as Sir Alex Ferguson once famously called it 'squeaky bum time'! Tight lines everyone for the new season!
