More than a million nappies are thrown out in Ireland every single day, and now Dublin families are being offered help to cut that number down.

Dublin City Council has teamed up with Voice Ireland to launch a new Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme, giving a limited number of families a free voucher for a starter kit worth trying from birth right through to potty training.

Each kit includes ten reusable nappies, a dozen washable wipes and a storage bag, redeemable through approved retailers.

Disposable nappies still make up around a tenth of what ends up in household bins, according to EPA figures, so the environmental case is hard to ignore.

Nine councils around the country have run similar schemes this year, and in Munster over three quarters of families who tried cloth nappies ended up cutting their disposable use by more than half.

Vouchers are limited and tend to go fast once word gets out.
