Match Report: Dunmore RFC 17 Colts 31
Last Saturday in the Fairgreen, Dunmore the Claremorris Colts u15s took on Dunmore RFC.
With the summer like conditions, it was a perfect day for fast flowing rugby.
The Colts started fast with some fantastic pressure on Dunmore leading to a turnover. Colts quickly got into their flow with Frank Jordan out-sprinting the Dunmore defence to score a great try in the corner. 0 - 5.
However, the big Dunmore team started to play simple rugby with big ball carriers cutting through the Colts defence. Despite a great last gasp effort by fullback, John Ryan, Dunmore crashed over to go 7 - 5 in front. Dunmore piled on more pressure when they again carried hard and Colts defenders were too high in their attempted tackles getting over the line to lead 12 - 5.
While the Colts defence was struggling, their
attack was 'in flow' and after some great work by the forwards at scrum time, some great carries by the 'pods', and Tadhg Kirrane delivering quick ball being from the rucks, Shane Diskin cut through the Dunmore defence for his first try. 12 - 10.
The Colts had a period of great pressure with the front row of Daniel Martin, Oran Corley and Jayden Cloherty supported by the strength of Charlie Cleary in the secod row doing well at scrum time; Conall Kelly releasing Emmanuep Apow and only for loosing his footing it would surely have been a try; and Ruairí O'Dea nearly converting when on the line twice. However, when chances aren't taken, the opposition take heart as Dunmore did striking again after poor tackling by the Colts letting the big Dunmore team in for a soft third try leaving the half time score 17 - 10 to the home side.
The coaches didn't spare it at half time and demanded two things for the second half: - tackle low and win the match.
Dunmore kicked off the second half and from the start the Colts seemed bigger, stronger and more determined than before. Evan Prendergast, Ruairí O'Dea and Daniel Heffernan set the tone with ferocious tackling and, with Shane Diskin too, quick over the ball at the break down.
Jayden Cloherty carried big with Reuben Charles, making his debut, adding lots in defence and attack. Some fantastic attacking play swept the ball wide and Emmanuel Apow finished with Conall Boyle converting the extras. 17 - 17.
James Larkin came on in the backrow. Another great defence set and Conall Boyle kicked downfield to get The Colts back into the Dunmore half and a few phases later Shane Diskin crashed over with Conall converting again to push ahead 24 - 17.
John Campbell stole a wonderful ball off a Dunmore lineout. Joseph Armstrong came in on the right wing. Conor Murphy's mazy run downfield took the Colts from their own 22 to Dunmore's and, following some more good handling, with a mighty charge upfield by Reuben who, in the tackle, offloaded wide to Emmanuel who touched down under the posts for try number five, converted by Conall.
Brandon Jennings came in on the left wing. Dunmore got back into the Colts 22 but a loose ball bravely dived upon by Liam Kelly restored possession for the Colts and secured the win.
Final score Dunmore 17 Claremorris Colts 31.
Thank you to Dunmore RFC for the great match and to Donal Raftery for officiating excellently.
