Cork Sculling Ladder was established in 1972-73 to provide opportunities for competitive racing for men and women scullers on the river Lee.

In 2019-2020, it incorporates the Cork Mixed Double Sculls Ladder.

Race 1: 42 Cathal Organ (Cappoquin RC) beat 46 Patrick O'Brien (Cork BCl) – 4L.

Race 2: 92 Paddy Lougheed (Cork BC) beat 164 Cormac Kelleher (Cork BC) [Free Challenge] – Easily.

Race 3: 17 Luca Madden (Cappoquin RC) beat 18 Killian O'Mahony (Cork BC) – 1½ L.

Race 4: 49 Ray McGanley (Cork BC) vs 48 Lauren O'Brien (UCCRC) – Dead Heat.
(In 54 years of challenges in the Cork Sculling Ladder, this is the first ever Dead Heat).

Race 5: 79 Iain Visser (Lee RC) beat 82 Cathal Dwane (Cork BC) – Easily.

Race 6: 56 James Loughran (Cork BC) beat 54 Ciaran Organ (Cappoquin RC) – Easily.

Race 7: 140 Sam O'Leary (Cork BC) vs 133 Ruairi Butler (Shandon BC) was postponed due to injury.

Earlier in the week, the following Row Overs were awarded:

93 Paddy Lougheed (Cork BC) R/O against (92) Daniel Shorten (Presentation College RC).

169 Cormac Kelleher (Cork BC) R/O against 164 Cathal Healy (Lee Valley RC).

Cork Sculling Ladder, sponsored by ARGOS FIRE and SAFETY Ltd., challenges at The Marina on Sunday, 15 February 2026.

Six races were held on a rising tide but with a stiff headwind, which increased over the course of the morning and included, in the later races, some almost boat-stopping gusts approaching the finish.

RESULTS :
Race 1: 26. Sean McHugh (Cork BC) beat 25. Adam Murphy (Cork BC). Easily.
Race 2: 66. Finn Whitley (Lee RC) beat 67. Archie Jones (Cork BC). 67 DNF.
Race 3: 68. Teddy Campion (Cork BC) beat 69. Rory O’Brien (Cork BC). 4 lengths.
Race 4: 108. Christopher Kerr (Shandon BC) neat 109. Mike Laffen (Cork BC). Easily.
Race 5: 122. Oisin Casey (Lee RC) beat 129. Cathal Murphy (Cork BC). Easily.
Race 6: 84. Arthur Dineen (Presentation College RC) beat 86. Padraig Ahern (Cork BC). Easily.

Well done to all the scullers who competed in the difficult conditions.

With winds forecast to increase over the next few hours and a Satus Yellow Wind Warning in place from 14:00, the decision has been taken to cancel racing today in the interest of safety. Clubs will be contacted about rescheduling.

A further 8 Challenge Races will take place on The Marina course (Blackrock to the river steps opposite the Eastern Gateway Bridge) on Sunday, 11 January 2026, between 12:00 and 13:30. Rain is forecast but do come along and cheer the scullers on! If you are walking at The Marina, please be aware that umpires will be on bicycles following the scullers to ensure safe and fair racing.
