Roche's Point Lighthouse - Irish Lights will be making some changes to Roche's Point light this Autumn.
The light is being converted to low energy, environmentally friendly LED. This will mean the range will be reduced from 20 to 18 nautical miles (for the white light, the red is slightly less), in line with changes to other light houses around our coast.
The current light uses a 1,500w bulb, the new one will be just 78w. This means that a generator will no longer be required as solar cells will be able to generate enough power for the LED light.
Since 1993 and unlike many lights, Roche's Point is a flashing, not rotating light.
Learn more about lighthouses at our Navigation Classes this winter in RCYC Crosshaven and at our new venue Elm Tree, Glounthane.

Major Changes to FASTNET Lighthouse
Both next summer and summer 2019 will see Irish Lights conduct some major work on the Fastnet, Ireland’s most southerly territory.
The cast iron bolts securing the lantern to the 113 year old Cornish Granite tower will be replaced.
The existing light, rotating on a bed of mercury will be decommissioned and the mercury removed. Instead there will be a low energy, environmentally friendly LED light on the roof of the existing lantern. This means that the range will be reduced from the current 27nm to 18nm. The new light will be solar powered by an array of cells placed on the existing balcony. This will be accompanied by a bank of batteries and the diesel generator will be mothballed.
You can learn more about Fastnet and other lighthouses and Aids to Navigation (AtoNs) by joining our Day Skipper Navigation Course where you will also study about charts, tides, weather, buoys, rules, pilotage, passage planning AND SAFETY - a LOT more than just navigation.
