Why your calf is called your second ❤️ heart.
Your calf muscle is vital for circulation and heart health❤️
🫀Blood flowing down your body (from heart to legs) is helped by gravity,but getting blood back up from your legs to your heart is harder—gravity works against it.
💪 How your calf helps
When you walk, run, or even stand on your toes:
Your calf muscles contract and squeeze the deep veins in your legs
This pushes blood upward toward your heart
One-way valves in your veins stop the blood from falling back down
This mechanism is called the calf muscle pump.
❤️ Why “second heart”?
It actively pumps blood, similar to how your heart does.
It significantly improves circulation, especially from the lower body
Without it, blood could pool in your legs, leading to swelling or conditions like varicose veins.
