The closing asanas, pranayama, savasana, meditation... they're all rarely the main focus of a class, but they're the most important part. I've been guilty of rushing through them as a student and teacher when I'm short on time. I'm trying to get better at giving "closing" more time.

Slow down in those last few asanas and take longer, slower breaths. Take a full 10 minute savasana to integrate. Make time for some of the non-asana limbs by adding some pranayama & mediation. Cut out some crazy stuff and make a little room for all of this.

To quote MTV Cribs, "this is where the magic happens" ✨

Some Second Series with lots of adaptation was on the menu today.

My primary movement practice has transitioned from asana to strength training, so I'm not as flexible. I can't bind in Pasasana or get my leg behind my head anymore. But I can still do versions of these poses with the same qualities. My lower back has been acting up, and trying to do Primary as the "easier" series has made it very angry. My funky version of Intermediate is the way forward for now!

Closing Sequence. Always the same. Longer breaths. Slower vinyasas. Calmer mind. Magic ✨

Figuring out adjustment consent is surprisingly tricky, and it's odd how little consistency there is amongst teachers on how to approach this. Adjustments exist to support the student in moments of challenge, help them ground, breathe more comfortably, find strength, and occasionally provide a therapeutic stretch (if done safely without "pushing"). Touch without permission should be avoided, and verbal cues used instead. But how do we get permission in a way that puts the student's actual preference first?

I've tried asking new students when I meet them, but this doesn't give them an option to withdraw later. And some students are too shy to say no during an intro.

I've tried cues like "place a hand on your belly / raise one leg in down dog if you would rather not be touched" but this makes adjustments an opt-out rather than an opt-in.

I've tried using stones by the mat, but it's hard for the student to change their mind mid class. And I almost slingshotted one at a student by kicking it accidentally πŸ€•

My new system is to place a card on each mat. The default is NO THANKS. if a student wants physical assistance they can flip it to YES PLEASE. And they can change their mind at any time. I just need to do my best to check the card before approaching someone. I'm hoping this method sticks!

Teachers! What systems have you tried and found useful? I'd love to know so leave a comment down below.

New Year's Led Primary Series

Come join me for our very last class of the year!

This class guides practitioners through the Ashtanga Primary Series. Using the traditional Sanskrit count, the teacher links breath with movement to build strength, flexibility and focus. This class is suitable for anyone familiar with the Ashtanga practice, but knowing the full series is not required. Accessible variations are offered for key postures to support a safe, sustainable practice for allΒ participants.

Stick around afterwards for chats, tea and snacks β˜•πŸͺπŸ—¨οΈ

My classes start with Surya Namaskar A & B. Always!

They're not a perfect warmup or optimal in any kind of physical way. But they're good at waking up the body, they're highly adaptable and they're simple to learn!

Yoga asana is an embodied practice, meaning you have to actually *do* it to experience the benefits. If you have a structured set of movements it may feel repetitive, but your body knows what to do intuitively.

If you're not thinking about where to put your left foot, you can focus more on breath regulation and tuning in to yourself. This inward focus is really helpful, especially at the beginning of practice.

Mediation can be seen as the practice of your mind doing absolutely nothing. So an internalised sequence acts like a moving meditation - doesn't sound so boring to me ✨

I'm in general, but I especially love using a pair of blocks when transitioning between seated asanas.

In my Heated Power Yoga class we work on lots of vinyasa transitions - the "jump back" and "jump through". I encourage everyone to use blocks to build core strength, work on compression (action of bringing legs to torso) and give space to "float" the feet away from the floor. The alternative is often to use the knees and simply step back - this is totally fine but doesn't build strength in the same way!

Tradition and rules can have a useful place when learning the practice to provide structure and discipline. But learning when to bend the rules when it serves your body and goals is more than okay. You have permission!

Great class today - see you all on the mat next week!
