The old Kenmare Road is to become one of only three designated walkways in Ireland that will be open for nudist walkers and runners this summer. This initiative is being put in place to attract more tourists to Kenmare, particularly from Germany and the Scandic countries who embrace naturism as a way of life.
The popular walk beat off stiff competition to be chosen by the European Naturist Society, and will be off limits to those wearing clothes every Monday morning until 12noon. As is common in other countries, when temperatures fall below zero walkers will be advised not to turn up due to medical concerns regarding frost bite to extremities.
“I hope they can stick it out,” said resident Willie Murphy, whilst neighbour F***y Twomey added, “At first I couldn’t bare it, but I’m getting used to the idea now. It’s a bit of storm in a D cup if you ask me.”
Concerns however have been raised by local dog walkers. “It’s embarrassing enough my dog sniffing someone’s bits when they’re clothed,” said Dick Long as he walked his dog, “I can’t imagine how I’m going to feel if they are naked.”
Kenmare Bird Watchers are reportedly quite twitchy about the new arrangement, however other local community groups have welcomed the initiative with Tidy Towns volunteers pledging keep the bushes trimmed, and the cycling club hoping to join them with a weekly ‘padded seat cycle’. The local photography club was unavailable for comment.
A page has been set up for people to register to help steward the event each week, and those who visited the site last week when the page crashed due to volume of traffic are asked to keep trying.
Kenmare Gardai stepped in to allay local concerns by vowing to keep an extremely close eye on the walkers.
