Donagh Barry RIP
I remember running out onto the rugby pitch at the NBA houses over fifty years ago. It was a crisp Sunday morning, and Castlebar Rugby Club were the opposition. They were captained, I think, by Donagh Barry.
Looking back now, what stays with me most is the sight of five Barry brothers on the same field: Donagh, Rory, Diarmuid, John and Kevin. Between the two teams, it made for a noisy affair, but a memorable one. There was something very special about seeing those five Mountcharles brothers displaying their skills on the same patch of grass.
Donagh was a fine player who played for Bective Rangers and Galwegians before joining Castlebar, where he gave outstanding service to the club, both as captain and as President.
The Barry family has given wonderful service to Donegal rugby. As well as the five brothers, Donagh’s nephew, Paddy, graced our pitches for so many years.
Sadly, Donagh has now left us, and the club records his passing with great regret. The club’s sympathies are extended to his wife Máire, daughter Karen, sons Greg, David and Shane, and to the wider family circle.
Rest in peace, Donagh.
