Finn Valley AC is deeply saddened at the death of club stalwart Paul Doherty.

Late of Woodlawn in Stranorlar, Paul and his wife Susan have been loyal, dedicated and dependable supporters of the club and its activities since the very early days.

Paul acted in a variety of capacities at Finn Valley AC over the years. He served on the Finn Valley AC committee, including a spell as treasurer and he has been a long-standing trustee of the club. He was also a member of the board of the Finn Valley Leisure Centre.

Even in recent times when in failing health, Paul continued to turn up and help in whatever way he could.

The officer board and members of Finn Valley AC owe a debt of gratitude to Paul for his unwavering attendance and trustworthy stewardship.

Finn Valley AC Chairman Dermot McGranaghan said: “It is a very sad day for everyone associated with Finn Valley AC. Paul was a tremendous servant of Finn Valley AC and someone the club could always depend on.

“Paul gave so much of his time and energy over many years, serving in a variety of roles and his commitment never wavered.

“On behalf of the club, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to Susan and all the family at this sad time. Paul will be greatly missed, but he will always be remembered with immense gratitude by everyone at Finn Valley.”

Paul, who passed away at Letterkenny University Hospital, was predeceased by his parents Maureen and Terry. He is survived by his wife Susan, sister Anne (Eugene) Cork, twin sister Regina (Gerard) Derry, niece Dervla, nephews Eoghan and Brendan, extended family, and friends.

Paul’s remains will be reposing at McCool’s Funeral Home, Ballybofey, on Friday October 23rd from 4 pm until rosary at 9pm.

Funeral leaving from the Funeral Home on Saturday October 24th at 9.30am for Requiem Mass in the Church of Mary Immaculate, Stranorlar at 10am with interment in Drumboe cemetery. The Requiem Mass will be streamed live via the Parish We**am at https://www.churchservices.tv/stranorlar

Finn Valley AC athlete Tara Rose Smith has confirmed a commitment to a scholarship at University of California, Berkeley for the autumn 2027.

Tara Rose will continue her academic and athletic journey in the NCAA Division 1 Cross Country and Track and Field.

She said: “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference, one of the Power Four conferences while studying at the #1 public university in the United States.

“A massive thank you to Finn Valley AC, my coaches Mark Connolly and Sinead Kenny for all their time, dedication and belief in me and everyone who has supported me throughout my athletics journey. I’m especially grateful to my family and friends for their constant encouragement and support.”

At the European Athletics U18 Championships in Italy during the summer, Smith broke a 36-year old record when finishing sixth in her 800m semi-final, the 2:06.73 breaking Siobhan Gallagher’s Donegal senior 800m record of 2:07.20 which was clocked in Boston in 1990.

At the weekend, Tara Rose competed at the Autumn Open Cross Country, going in the U20 race, and is looking forward to a busy winter with FVAC on the cross country circuit.

It has been confirmed today that Finn Valley AC athlete Mark English is to be awarded the Freedom of Donegal by Donegal County Council.

Finn Valley AC would like to place on record its thanks to the members of Donegal County Council, including our local members in the Lifford-Stranorlar MD, for tabling this motion and for unanimously supporting it.

We would like to extend a particular thanks to Cllr Patrick McGowan and Cllr Ciaran Brogan who proposed and seconded the motion at today's meeting in Lifford.

Congratulations to Mark, a fitting and right acknowledgment following a history-making season that included the European 800m gold and a World Ultimate final appearance.

Mark will become the second person associated with Finn Valley AC to be bestowed with the county’s top honour after club founder and stalwart Patsy McGonagle, the former Irish athletics team manager, who was honoured in 2013.

Odhrán McBrearty of Finn Valley AC claims an excellent silver medal in the junior men’s race at the Autumn Open Cross Country.

Odhrán was just five seconds behind winner Ruby Devereaux from Cork City BC.

A typically determined and gutsy run by Odhrán who got in ahead of Harry Moran (Donore) for silver.

Mark Kearns (20) and Paraic McDermott also went in the same race while Oisin Toye was ninth in the senior men’s event with Padraig Og McDermott (38) also in the senior race.
