The inaugural Mary Dunne Memorial Cup competition was held in blazing sunshine last weekend. In the spirit of Mary Dunne, this was a very social 3 days of tennis starting with 48 participants and ending with 4 finalists. Thanks to the Club Captains and Coach Lisa Matthews for putting together such an enjoyable tennis competition, and the Social and Bar Committees for making sure everyone was well refreshed. The Mary Dunne Memorial Cup was presented by Club President, David Leonard and Mary Dunne's son, Kerry, to the winners, Patrick Coakley and Wendy Horan. Congratulations to the winners, Patrick and Wendy, finalists Jill Lacey and Ben Mason, and all the participants and organisers for making the event so enjoyable.

Some great tips on how to handle nerves during a match...

Get nervous during a ‘serious’ match? It’s only natural.

Five coping strategies:
1. Take time between rallies, breathe deeply, relax your muscles.
2. Learn from previous points, but avoid dwelling on ‘what might have been`.
3. Concentrate only on the point you are playing now, or about to play. Thinking about the future (“if I win the next two games it will be one set all”) by definition means that you are not 100% focused on what you are doing now…
4. Strike the ball the same way whether you are 5-0 up or 0-5 down. Play the shot not the score.
5. Keep at the back of your mind that the world (and your world!) will keep turning whether you win or lose this match…

Enjoy your match!
