Today is my Dad’s birthday.

He was born on 23rd March 1919. He was 20 years older than my Mum (scandalous, I know!).

He taught me how to swim.

He taught me how to fish.

He taught me how to chop wood.

He taught me how to pitch a tent.

He taught me how to shoot.

He taught me how to sail.

He taught me how to drive.

He taught me how to fix a car.

He taught me how to race a motorbike.

He taught me how to drink port.

He taught me how to be a man.

He taught me how to love.

We worked together for a while. In my 20s, he lived with me and my partner for a couple of months when he was in remission (which was when I learned how to drink port).

He passed away on 14th October 1988.

He worked in sales too.

While I never heard him say these words, through his actions, this is what he taught me about sales.

“Put compassion before commission. Lead with your heart. Learn to serve”.

He taught me so much, he had so much to give.

Tonight, Dad, I’ll be raising a glass of port to you.

The best experiences in life happen when you let them.

In other words, get the f@*k out of your own way!

I’ve lived most of my life too afraid to show up as myself.

Too afraid that I wouldn’t be liked, that I wouldn’t fit in, and that people would see me as inadequate. Which was how I felt.

It’s taken some work and inner reflection to unwrap myself from the cloak of inadequacy.

The ultimate reward though is I get to be me. Unashamedly, authentically me.

And I love it.

I no longer have to be concerned with what anyone else thinks.

I’ve learned - what everyone else thinks is none of my business!

Another reward is I get to connect more with others.

In showing up not wanting or needing to be liked, being myself, allows you to be open to whatever happens.

So, this is me, showing up.

I’m on a journey of self-discovery, sharing a lifetime of sales and marketing experience and how to get the f@*k out of your own way to be your authentic self in selling.

It’s there for you to experience too.

OK, so number six isn’t technically a mistake. But it is a mistake if you do nothing about it.

There’s no such thing as a natural salesperson. Sales is a skill, a muscle that you can learn and develop ongoing.

It feels unnatural, trying to ‘make’ someone buy something. This is why many business owners are uncomfortable with selling.

The truth is, if it feels unnatural, then you’re doing it wrong.

There is a better way and it involves you being 100% authentically you. With not an ounce of ‘salesy’ in sight.

Each of the seven mistakes has an opposite - a solution. If you can figure out and apply each solution for your business, then you’re well ahead of most of your competition and on your way to less stress, more sales and more success.

OK, so sales isn’t always easy, but it also doesn’t have to be hard. Or scary. Or salesy.

The key is to approach sales with authenticity and a genuine desire to help your customers.

When you focus on understanding your customer, providing value and offering solutions, sales become a natural part of the conversation. It's about building relationships and trust and uncovering ways you can help.

Be a helper, not a seller.

I see it every day. Business owners fail to explain what problems they solve for their customers. Customers don’t care about your product or service. They only care if they can clearly see how your product or service will solve their problems. Period.

If your messaging doesn’t spell it out, then you’re missing out on sales and the chance to help more people.

Just as you may have a range of products and services, the customer has a range of problems. By solving their problems in advance, and including this in your communication, you can increase their belief in working with you, and that their problems will be solved.

What’s preventing the customer from reaching their dream outcome? Look at the entire process. From where the customer is now, to reaching their dream outcome. Put together a list of their problems. Flip each problem into a solution.

By working the solutions to the customer’s problems into your marketing, you can connect on an emotional level. In their eyes, you understand their problems – you are the answer to their problems. You are their solution!

What is it about Sting that makes him so attractive?

Is it s*x appeal? Charisma? Confidence? Talent? Physical beauty?

He has all of those. But I think the one overarching quality is authenticity. He is unashamedly Sting.

To me, authenticity means showing up confidently as your true self without compromising.

Your values, ideals and actions are in alignment. You stand up for what you believe in, and you do it in a way that can’t help but attract respect.

Great leaders often exude authenticity. So do great salespeople.

The good news is it’s something we can all learn and develop.

What are the benefits?

I’ll hold my hand up. I’ve made these mistakes.

I remember one particular sales call, and when it was over, I thought, “Damnit, I got that so wrong”.

Making mistakes is part of the human process. It’s an important part of how we learn.

Being aware of a mistake is the first step to learning.

Giving yourself grace is the second step. Don’t beat yourself up. Instead, be grateful for the experience and acknowledge your ability to learn and grow.

Next, review where you went wrong and make a plan to correct it.

Use these steps to help plan your sales success.

✅Think Win-Win. Ensure you’re working to make customer’s life better, in balance with your objectives.

✅Understand buying motivations and use stories as evidence where you have supplied solutions for other customers.

✅Uncover the buyer’s deep needs. Ask more questions. And go deeper with questions, such as, “Tell me more about that” and “How does that impact you/your team/the business?”

✅What conversation is the customer having with themselves? Put yourself in their shoes – what would your concerns be? Has the conversation answered all your concerns? Has trust been established?

✅Ask “What haven’t we talked about that we should be addressing?”

✅Finally, watch for buying signals and ask for the sale. Test close with the question “Is there anything that would prevent you from placing an order now?”
