Mr. Royle is particularly interested in events commemorating the sinking of the RMS Leinster as Scotland prepares to mark the centenary of the "Iolaire" disaster on New Year's Day 1919. The ship, carrying 283 sailors returning from WWI to the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, hit rocks known as "The Beasts of Holm" - official records put the death toll at 205, 181 of whom were islanders (essentially causing the death of the generation of islanders).
And, just as the RMS Leinster had a hero, Will Maher, the Iolaire, too, saw an extraordinary display of heroism from John F. Macleod who is credited with saving 40 lives by swimming ashore with a heaving line which allowed survivors to make their way ashore.
An Admiralty enquiry found no explanation for the disaster.

Mr. Evans stressed how the RMS Leinster centenary events on both side of the Irish sea were cementing the link between the two town and ensuring that the disaster would never be forgotten.
