Dr. Cilian O’Maoldomhnaigh has been announced as the winner of the Trinity Allergan Innovation Award. The award, which was presented at the Trinity Translational Medical Institute research day, will provide Cillian with an Allergan sponsored bursary of €9,500 to further his research into developing more effective vaccinations against tuberculosis.
With Tuberculosis being the single biggest infectious killer in the world, the focus of Cillian’s research will centre on the differences between how adults and children respond to getting the infection. By identifying the different immunological and metabolic response pathways Cillian hopes his research will lead to improved drug therapies and better ways to vaccinate against the disease.
Speaking about the Allergan Innovation Award, Dr. Cilian O’Maoldomhnaigh commented: “I would like to thank Allergan for this bursary that will allow me to attend international conferences and courses, where the latest advances in the cutting-edge field of immunometabolism in tuberculosis infection will be explored and where we can showcase our research. The Post-Graduate Certificate in Creative Thinking, Innovation and Entrepreneurship offers a wonderful opportunity to continue my personal development during my PhD studies. I would also like to thank the National Children’s Research Centre for funding my project.”

Our Story

For over 400 years innovation has been a key driver for the delivery of a world class learning experience at Trinity College Dublin. Trinity is committed to providing an environment that enables innovation and entrepreneurship at all levels across the university.

As a result, the university has established Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace, housed in a designated space and co-located with an expanded School of Business. Tangent has already taken great strides in implementing a strategy providing Trinity’s community of students, staff and academics with the supports and facilities to pursue entrepreneurship as a viable and rewarding career path. We aim to inspire the next generation of student entrepreneurs and start-ups by enabling them to explore new possibilities. We collaborate with companies large and small who play an active role working with our start-ups, our students, and on our educational and training programmes.

In addition, Tangent will create a front door to the dynamic and burgeoning entrepreneurship community in Dublin and to the many Trinity graduate entrepreneurs who are creating or driving new businesses globally.

Tangent is a place in which to imagine, collaborate, and put ideas into action that can change the world.
