What I particularly like about the yoga wheel is the way it can give you somewhere to go with a backbend.
Rather than simply asking the body to bend further, the wheel can provide support and useful points of contact as we explore extension through the spine and a longer stretch across the front of the body: the hips, abdomen, chest and shoulders.
And in the workshop, we’ll gradually work towards Kapotasana, or King Pigeon Pose.
This is quite different from the pigeon pose many of us know as a one-leg-forward hip and glute stretch. King Pigeon is a much deeper backbend, with the added challenge of reaching the back foot.
We won't be jumping straight into that shape. The workshop will build towards it through strength, mobility, breath and progressively supported backbends on the wheel.
If you'd like to try some of the wheel work without committing to the workshop, I'll also be bringing the wheel into my 8.30am class at Little Bird Yoga this Saturday, 10 October.
Supported: Backbends on the Yoga Wheel
