Coffee? Eggs? Red w**e? Supplements? 10,000 steps? Smart watches?

Heart health advice online has become remarkably good at turning nuanced questions into absolute rules.
Unfortunately, medicine rarely works like that.

So: yes, no or it depends — cardiologist edition.
And “it depends” may be the most medically accurate answer of the three.

I am delighted and honoured to share that I have been elected Vice President of the European Society of Lifestyle Medicine (ELMO).

Throughout my career in Cardiology, I have become increasingly passionate about the role lifestyle medicine can play in preventing disease, improving health outcomes and helping people live longer, healthier lives.

This appointment is both a tremendous honour and an exciting opportunity to help advance that mission on a European scale.

ELMO brings together clinicians, researchers, educators and advocates who share a commitment to making evidence-based lifestyle medicine a fundamental part of healthcare.

I look forward to working alongside my colleagues across Europe to strengthen collaboration, advance education and research, and help bring prevention further to the forefront of modern medicine.

My sincere thanks to my colleagues at ELMO for their trust and confidence. I am very much looking forward to what we can achieve together.

The future of healthcare must be about more than treating disease. It must also be about preventing it.

One of the things cardiologists hear surprisingly often is:

“I thought it would go away.”

Not every unusual symptom means there is something wrong with your heart. But there are symptoms I would much rather someone have assessed than ignore.

Chest discomfort. Unexplained breathlessness. Fainting or near-fainting. New or persistent palpitations. A significant unexplained change in your ability to exercise.

And if symptoms are sudden, severe or you think you may be experiencing a medical emergency, seek urgent medical attention.

Listening to your body isn’t overreacting. Sometimes it is exactly what prevents a problem becoming a much bigger one.

If I were turning 40 tomorrow, I wouldn’t be looking for a complete lifestyle overhaul.
I’d be looking at the handful of things that have the greatest potential to influence my health over the next 20 or 30 years.
Know your blood pressure. Understand your cholesterol. Move regularly. Prioritise sleep. Pay attention to what you eat most of the time.
None of these are particularly glamorous.
But prevention usually isn’t.
The things you do consistently matter far more than the health kick you manage for three weeks every January.

We talk a lot about what it takes to be successful.

Long hours. Responsibility. Pressure. Being available. Pushing through when you’re tired.

But after years working as a cardiologist, I think there’s another question worth asking:
What is that success costing you?

Your blood pressure doesn’t care how important the meeting is. Your heart doesn’t know that things will “calm down next month”.

And chronic stress, poor sleep, and inactivity don’t become harmless because they happened in pursuit of a successful career.

I’m increasingly interested in bringing this conversation into workplaces and onto stages.

Because professional success and long-term health should never have to be competing ambitions.

One of the most important lessons about changing your health came from one of my patients.
We often think improving our health means changing everything at once — our diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and routines.
But trying to overhaul your entire life overnight is often exactly why change doesn’t last.
Start smaller. Choose one thing. Make it achievable. Repeat it until it becomes part of your life — then build from there.
Sustainable progress doesn’t have to be dramatic. It just has to be something you can keep doing.

October reset — without the detox, restriction or ridiculous rules.

Choose a few simple things you can genuinely commit to this month.

Walk more.
Prioritise sleep.
Know your numbers.
Eat more whole foods.
Make time for your health.

You don’t need a perfect month.

You need a month you can build on.

Save this and come back to it at the end of October.

You probably know your phone number without thinking.

But do you know the numbers that tell you something about your health?

Knowing where you stand gives you the opportunity to act early — rather than waiting until something goes wrong.

Save this list and ask about your numbers at your next health check.

Today is World Heart Day ❤️

Looking after your heart doesn’t require perfection. It’s the small things we do consistently that can make a real difference over time.

Moving more, eating well, getting enough sleep, managing stress and knowing important numbers like your blood pressure and cholesterol are all part of looking after your cardiovascular health.

The best time to start? Today. One small change is still a change in the right direction.

Look after your heart — you only get one.

As a Cardiologist, these are symptoms I wouldn’t want you simply brushing off.

It doesn’t mean every one of them is caused by heart disease — but context matters, particularly if symptoms are new, worsening or happening with exertion.

Save this. It might be useful one day.

And if you’re experiencing severe or sudden symptoms, seek urgent medical attention.
